Senior Environmental Technical Specialist
About the role
The Senior Environmental Technical Specialist is to perform the duties and responsibilities provided below in accordance with Ambipar’s standard operating procedures and performance objectives, while adhering to the applicable health and safety regulations, and professional codes of conduct.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review pertinent historical reports and interpret site-specific data to produce accurate project overviews and assist in risk receptor analysis and development of Conceptual Site Models.
- Review and interpret scientific data, identify data gaps and develop recommendations to progress sites towards regulatory closure.
- Develop and implement risk management strategies to reduce environmental liabilities.
- Prepare Phase 2 ESA reports, remediation reports, soil and groundwater reports to support EPEA-approved facilities and regulatory variance letter requests.
- Provide subject matter expertise to support permitting, remediation, and compliance programs.
- Submit draft technical report to Technical Team Lead and/or Project Manger for review. Update all report edits identified by technical review in a timely and efficient manner.
- Collaborate with Technical Team Lead to develop site-specific remediation guidelines, including Tier 2 adjustments or SST.
- Assist Project Managers with the development of Scopes of Work and Cost Estimates for projects; provide technical support to Project Managers.
- As experience is gained, act as a Technical Advisor and provide review of technical reports, including contaminated and regulatory sites.
- Interface with clients or AEP/AER, as required, to support complex and/or sensitive projects or programs.
- Provide opportunities for mentorship, training and development of environmental professionals.
- Promote teamwork and effective and respectful collaboration.
- Provide input to the existing quality control program, including but not limited to field data collection, data interpretation, data presentation, project deliverables, and project management.
- Remain current with environmental legislation and regulatory updates.
- Attend technical workshops or courses to help identify opportunities for technical solutions and integration into Ambipar’s daily operations, including analytical justifications, Tier 2, SST, and site-specific liability, etc.
- Attend technical seminars, conferences and industry events as a representative of Ambipar.
- Provide technical presentations on behalf of Ambipar.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental services or equivalent;
- Professional Designation of P.Eng. or P.Geol. and a member of APEGA.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience working on soil and groundwater assessment projects.
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
- Excellent technical writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of Tier 1 guidelines, Tier 2 guideline modification, risk assessment and management, and Contaminated Sites Policy Framework.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and uncertainty evaluation in risk assessment.
- Familiarity with applicable municipal, provincial and federal bylaws, regulations, and Acts.
HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL (HSE) REQUIREMENTS
- Reviewing and adhering to the company HSE policies and procedures as directed by the HSE Manager.
- Complying with policy, rules, standards, procedures, and practices.
- Correcting hazards as soon as they are observed.
- Immediately reporting to supervisory personnel all incidents, injuries / illnesses, near misses and hazard ID’s.
- Using equipment and tools (including rentals) as per manufacturer’s specifications and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Knowing the location, type and operation of emergency equipment and being familiar with site-specific emergency procedures.
- Refusing to perform work that poses an imminent danger and/or refusing to perform work they are not qualified to perform.
- Participating in workplace inspections and monthly office safety inspections as directed by the HSE Manager.
