As part of the IT Infrastructure Services department, the Network Operations Centre (NOC) installs, maintains and supports the networking, Wi-Fi, and phone systems for the University. Situated in the SFU Burnaby Data Centre, the NOC team also provides support for the electrical, cooling and building management systems used by both the SFU administrative and research computing systems.

About the Role

The Network Operator receives, prioritizes, responds to, and documents requests and trouble tickets related to data communication problems on the University's customized institutional network supporting 15,000 workstations and100 computer servers for a community of 25,000, as well as voice systems, security systems, and 40 remote departmental computing environments on a switched broadband network connecting the University's three campuses and Data Centres. The incumbent also monitors the security, infrastructure, and operation of the University's Data Centres; processes moves, additions, and changes to network connections and assists with moves, additions, and changes to servers and equipment; conducts network tests; troubleshoots first level network problems; configures switch ports; modifies network configurations; and maintains the safety, security, organization, and cleanliness of the Data Centres. The Network Operator is a member of a 24/7 coverage team covering day, afternoon, night, and weekend shifts.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and a technically adept professional with strong foundations in networking, troubleshooting, and operational support. Demonstrates excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues in complex campus and data centre environments. Possesses solid knowledge of network infrastructure, Wi‑Fi technologies, network monitoring tools, and structured network cabling. Maintains a proactive, hands-on approach and follows established procedures with precision. Communicates effectively and collaborates well within team environments. Adaptable and dependable, with a strong commitment to service reliability, safety, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced operational setting. Able to participate in an on-call rotation for overnight and weekend support.
