The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description
The Data and Cloud Compute team is seeking a full-time Summer Student to join for a 4-month term from May to August 2026. In this position, you’ll gain hands-on experience working with modern enterprise platforms like Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, and the Microsoft Power Platform. You’ll contribute to real initiatives involving data quality, reporting, cloud governance, and low-code solutions—all while learning how large organizations manage and scale data.
As the successful candidate, you will work alongside Product Managers, Project Managers, Data Engineers, Cloud Architects, Azure Administrators and many more skilled professionals.
We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.
Key accountabilities:
Work with Data & Analytics
- Perform data quality checks (completeness, duplicates, freshness)
- Support testing of reports and dashboards
- Inventory and analyze Power BI reports and datasets
- Identify opportunities to improve or streamline reporting
Explore Cloud & Azure
- Inventory cloud resources across development and test environments
- Validate naming and tagging standards
- Assist with cost tracking and governance improvements
- Document cloud architectures using simple diagrams
Strengthen Data Foundations
- Help organize and clean up data inventories (datasets, sources, owners)
- Create high-level data lineage diagrams to visualize data flows
- Improve visibility and understanding of enterprise data assets
Build with Power Platform
- Inventory and document Power Apps and automations
- Support testing and improvement of apps and workflows
- Help develop starter templates for Power BI and automation solutions
- Assist with intake and tracking of new requests
Improve Processes & Documentation
- Create and enhance documentation, guides, and knowledge articles
- Support service and workflow documentation in ServiceNow
- Identify gaps in governance and knowledge management materials
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
What you’ll bring to us:
- Completion of at least third year coursework in a post-secondary program such as Computer Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or Business Technology.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Interest in data, cloud, or emerging technologies (AI is a bonus!).
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to take initiative and work both independently and in a team.
- Exposure to Power BI, Azure, or Power Platform tools.
- Basic understanding of data concepts (reports, dashboards, data quality).
- Experience with Excel or data analysis tools is an asset.

We dispatch the power sold by generators, using the lowest-priced electricity first and then the next lowest until the need for power has been satisfied. We also enforce transmission tariffs and regulations, keeping the market fair and open for everyone.
Plan the future of the system and its infrastructure As Alberta grows, so does its need for electricity. We plan ahead and expand the grid, ensuring the right transmission lines are built as efficiently as possible. As the province moves away from coal-fired power plants, we're enabling investment in renewable energy. In everything we do, our eye is always on the future.
