Are you the one we’re looking for?

We are seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Therapeutic Recreation Worker who demonstrates our values of compassion, accountability, responsiveness, and empowerment; to our clients, families, and each other.

The Therapeutic Recreation Worker assists vulnerably housed individuals and social housing communities through the planning and implementation of recreational activities based on individual and group social, practical, and leisure needs. The Therapeutic Recreation Worker is a mobile position that supports clients to engage in community and social connections through the Community Housing Support Program and must be in the community connecting with tenants, property managers, and Region of Halton staff. The Therapeutic Recreation Worker is required to travel across the Region of Halton, including Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville, and Burlington. This includes working on-site in community housing buildings to engage clients accordingly. In addition to the CHSP requirements, there is a dedicated portion of time spent on-site with programming and our unhoused population.

This position is a unionized, part-time, permanent position. The rate of pay is $24.38 per hour. This position is 30 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ability to build rec therapy programming for face-to-face supports, as well as virtual/digital supports for clients across Halton Region.

  • Working with community resources to build unique resources for clientele to support isolation and community accessibility.

  • Experience working with adults with mental health and addictions issues and people experiencing homelessness and providing supports to them.

  • A passion for supporting communities in need through client-centered housing approaches that focus on the social determinants of health.

  • Knowledge of the recovery and harm reduction models.

  • Ability to deal with confidential information and possess excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to form helping relationships based on trust and empowerment.

  • Evidence as a highly motivated team player, with proven ability to take initiative and be self-directed.

  • Must be able to meet travel requirements of the job and be available to work on site in various locations across Halton (primarily Burlington and Milton).

  • Must be able to work flexible shifts depending on client needs.

What you will bring:

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Human Services or related field with a background in recreation leadership and/or related experience.

  • Experience in case management techniques, non-violent crisis intervention and First Aid/CPR.

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and diverse needs, identities and cultural backgrounds of individuals in underserved communities and skilled in establishing trusting relationships;

  • Knowledge of the community including local programs and services;

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as part of a team and across multiple sectors

  • Computer and social media literacy.
