About the role
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position Title: Kitchen Helper 2
Department: Food & Beverage
Reports to: Outlet Manager
Employee status: Part-time, hourly
Position Purpose
This position supports our Food and Beverage Operation at Grand Noodle Emporium. They are primarily responsible for preparing ingredients and upholding the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen. The Kitchen Helper takes direction from the Outlet Manager and prepares ingredients and other dishes. This position consistently maintains a “team-centered” atmosphere through embracing the mission statement and values of the Alma Mater Society. This is an entry level position for someone who wants to get their foot in the door for the culinary world. Training will be considered for the right applicant who possesses natural talent, motivation, personality, work ethic and passion.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Report to the supervisor on duty to receive work orders for the day
- Direct to other kitchen helpers in the completion of orders and review completed work
- Prepare ingredients to meet function specifications
- Operate Point of Sales System and cash register
- Deliver food to customers’ tables
- Demonstrate a good understanding of shelf life by checking fridges, labels, dates and rotating product
- Receive product and supplies in relation to store needs and stores them in appropriate areas
- Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen by sweeping and mopping floors and removing trash
- Wash dishes, glassware and other kitchen equipment
- Provide excellent customer service
- Work closely and cooperatively with the entire food and drink team
- Protect store inventory by providing excellent customer service, adhering to loss prevention procedures, and by sharing any suspected policy violations with store management
- Promote special services such as recycling programs
- Working action food stations for catered events as required
- Works with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience working in a professional food preparation/assembly environment is an asset (e.g. Sandwich shop, deli counter, fast food, concession stand, quick service restaurant)
- Previous experience with large kitchen equipment such as steamers, ovens, tilt skillets, works, kettles and fryers an asset
- Previous cooking skills or experience is an asset
- Basic level of knife skills is required
- Previous experience with food preparation or assembly is an asset
- Ability to develop positive working relationships within a team by helping out as needed or requested
- Ability to work in a high volume busy kitchen is required
- Ability to adapt to changing customer or service volume levels with a sense of urgency
- Ability to be cross-trained in all parts of food cleaning and preparation
- Flexibility for schedule based needs (evenings, weekends and holidays)
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job
- Ability to stand for 100% of shift
- Positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team is a requirement
