We are hiring a Senior Legal Advisor, Human Resources!

At Western University, we are committed to fostering a fair and respectful workplace. We are seeking a seasoned legal professional to join our Human Resources team as aSenior Legal Advisor, where your expertise will help guide complex employment and labour matters across a diverse academic community.

Reporting to the Director, Employee Relations, you will play a key role in shaping how the University navigates employee and labour relations. In this position, you will provide thoughtful, strategic legal advice on a wide range of issues involving staff and students, ensuring that decisions are grounded in sound legal principles and aligned with Western’s commitment to equity and consistency.

Your work will span the full spectrum of labour and employment law. From interpreting legislation, case law, and collective agreements, to preparing legal opinions and guiding senior leaders through complex situations, you will bring clarity to challenging issues. You will also take a lead role in negotiations, grievance processes, arbitration proceedings, and workplace investigations, helping the University resolve matters effectively while maintaining strong relationships.

What you'll bring

This role is ideal for a lawyer who thrives in a dynamic, multifaceted environment. You bring experience practicing labour and employment law, with a strong background advising organizations on employee relations, union matters, and dispute resolution. Experience in a unionized environment is essential, as is your ability to navigate sensitive situations with professionalism and sound judgment.

You hold an LL.B. or J.D. from an accredited Canadian law school (or an NCA Certificate of Qualification) and are a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, or eligible for admission.

Beyond your technical expertise, you are known for your ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, practical guidance. You write with precision, communicate with confidence, and collaborate effectively across teams. Your approach is grounded in integrity, strong ethical standards, and a commitment to fair and consistent outcomes.

Salary & Benefits

This is a regular full-time opportunity, fully in-person on-site. Salary Grade 19: base salary of $105,000 to $145,000 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications. A comprehensive benefits and pension plan will be provided.
