About the role

JOB SUMMARY

Laboratory Services provides laboratory testing services for drinking water, solid wastes, effluents, receiving waters and ground waters.

You provide administrative and data support for the Laboratory Services unit.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year community college diploma as a Chemical Laboratory Technician

Minimum of 3 years of related experience in database management in a laboratory environment or similar field

Completion of health and safety training required
Training in Oracle, relational data base management, or data processing software is an asset

KNOWLEDGE

  • Detailed knowledge of the City of Ottawa organizational structure, services and personnel
  • Working knowledge of and ability to utilize corporate software including but not limited to, Outlook, Word, Excel, Cognos Impromptu, MOE, EDWIS, City of Ottawa’s Laboratory Information Management System, WaterTrax and the Internet
  • Knowledge of quality assurance/quality control principals
  • Working knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, and general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies/procedures related to health and safety

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to read, interpret, understand and explain water distribution policies and procedures including municipal by-laws
  • Strong data entry, retrieval and keyboard skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to operate basic office and telecommunications equipment including fax machines photocopiers, computer, printer and email
  • Ability to interact effectively with management, and staff, as well as persons external to the corporation
  • Ability to exercise judgment in decision-making
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills combined with excellent customer service skills especially during emergency or stressful situations
  • Able to manage work assignments in order to meet required timelines
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Good attendance record
  • Punctual, reliable and dependable

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
