Position Summary

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is seeking a professional, positive, and detail-oriented individual to join our Finance Team. Reporting to the Manager, Accounting & Reporting, the Senior Accountant – Financial Reporting is responsible for leading the City’s financial reporting and accounting activities. This includes preparing financial statements, coordinating audits, and ensuring accurate and timely financial records. The role also oversees accounts payable and receivable and supports compliance with accounting standards and municipal regulations.

In addition, the Senior Accountant – Financial Reporting provides financial services to the City of Fort Saskatchewan Library Board, including audit support, reporting, and transaction oversight. The position works closely with other finance staff to maintain strong internal controls and improve financial systems and processes.

Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the preparation of financial and management reports, including triannual and year-end reporting.
  • Prepare and finalize the City’s and Library Board’s annual financial statements in accordance with public sector accounting standards.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger and financial records.
  • Coordinate the annual financial audit process, including preparation of working papers and liaison with external auditors.
  • Monitor compliance with the Municipal Government Act, accounting standards, and internal financial policies.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance to departments and support the implementation of new standards.
  • Support treasury operations by providing input on investment decisions and monitoring cash flow needs.
  • Collaborate with the accountants responsible for capital assets to ensure accurate accounting and reporting of capital projects and assets.
  • Directly supervise the clerks responsible for accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Support financial modernization initiatives, including upgrades to enterprise resource planning systems and automation of financial processes.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a University degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Ongoing professional development in public sector finance, leadership, and policy is considered an asset. CPA Designation (CA, CMA, or CGA) in good standing is required and must be maintained throughout the term of employment. A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment is required. The incumbent will have strong technical knowledge of public sector accounting standards and financial reporting requirements, experience preparing complex financial statements and audit documentation, and advanced general ledger and financial reconciliation skills. Proven ability to supervise staff and manage day-to-day financial operations is essential. Proficiency in financial systems and enterprise resource planning software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics GP), experience with budgeting and reporting tools (e.g., FMW Web, Questica), and knowledge of IntelliLeisure Point of Sale and Laserfiche is preferred. This position requires strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint are required, as well as comfortability in learning and adapting to new financial technologies.

Hours of Work: 37.5 per week; Monday to Friday
