The Opportunity

The City of St. John’s Recreation Division is currently seeking motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals, who enjoy working outdoors, to work in our Summer Recreation Programs as Outdoor Recreation Instructors facilitating various outdoor programs and activities to groups of all ages.

Accountabilities

Outdoor Recreation Instructors must be comfortable providing leadership and instruction to groups and/or individuals of all ages and skills levels. They will supervise and lead participants through a wide variety of outdoor and watersport activities, as outlined by supervisors. Instructors must possess a strong sense of safety awareness, good oral communication, customer services skills and problem-solving ability.

The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications

  • Experience, or certification in, some or all the following activities: Paddle Sports, Wilderness Survival, Archery and/or Backcountry Camping
  • Previous experience working with or instructing group programs with children/youth/adults and/or seniors in a recreational group setting would be considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong knowledge of group dynamics and team building

Other Requirements

  • Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check (or equivalent) – Dated not more than six months prior to hire
  • Must be comfortable in an aquatic setting

Additional Qualifications (provided Free For Successful Candidates If Required)

  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification
  • Paddle Canada Certifications

Working Conditions

These positions are required to work outside in all types of weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

Many of these positions require physical agility and stamina to carry out required duties. Candidates must be comfortable in an aquatic setting as these positions involve activities such as swimming and canoeing.

Hours of Work

  • Up to 40 hours per week
  • Program start and end dates: June 29 - September 4, 2026
  • Must be available to attend mandatory training. First possible training date beginning June 9 and continuing throughout the month of June. Some training may be offered virtually, evenings and/or weekends.
  • Dates may vary according to placement
