Disability Programs, Crisis and Respite Services Unit supports individuals with intellectual disabilities delivering assessment and stabilization services. Your work promotes and supports individuals to achieve the highest quality of life possible with full participation and presence in their community.

McCallum Group Home in Saskatoon requires caring, compassionate, empathetic, and enthusiastic candidates for the role of Community Residential Worker. You will work directly with people, supporting them to live their life to the fullest with a focus on creating positive, engaging experiences. Building rapport and a trusting relationship with the individual, their family, stakeholders and third parties is essential. Your hands-on work and engagement with the individual are conducted in a learning and supportive manner and utilizes your effective communication, positive role modeling, patience, adaptability, leadership, and organization to assist in completion of your responsibilities.

Providing direct support to individuals, focusing on their holistic well-being, guided by their unique needs and preferences is vital. A key component in this role is the implementation of individualized and least restrictive behavior support strategies. During time of behavioural escalations, a calm approach while assessing and evaluating the situation for any immediate risks to the individual or others is necessary for successful outcomes. Effective communication is essential: using clear and simple language, active listening and avoiding confrontation. You will apply de-escalation techniques maintaining a neutral demeanor, offering choices to give the individual a sense of self determination, and may use distraction to redirect their focus. It is also expected that you remain with the individual to prevent self-harm, encourage self-soothing activities, and offer reassurance about their safety.

Additional responsibilities include driving and transporting individuals, assisting with all activities of daily living including hygiene, meals and actively supporting the development of essential life skills to foster independence and growth.

What we offer:

Typically, the level of knowledge and skills for this position is obtained through 2-3 years post-secondary education in a related human service field such as Disability Support Worker, Psychology or Social Work and/or gained through related experience working in a therapeutic capacity with people with intellectual disabilities who may display complex and challenging behaviours.

This is a shift work position in a program that provides person centred care 24 hours/day; 7 days/week. The length of shift is 8 hours and includes days, evenings and nights. The successful candidate must be legally eligible to operate a vehicle supplied by the Ministry.

  • Please note, due to the nature of the position employees will be exposed to the risk of violent (behavioural) situations in which PART training reinforces safety concerns and assists in precautionary measures.
