Wood is recruiting a DCS Instrumentation and Controls Technician (Casual /Temporary) to join its Operations team focusing on the oil and gas petrochemical industry. This opportunity is offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, working on an as needed, call-out basis.

The Role

  • Location: Offshore Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Site / Office based: Hibernia
  • Hours of work: 12 hours per day
  • Rotation / work pattern: Call out, as needed
  • Required: Site-specific medical, drug and alcohol testing
  • Unionized position: Rates follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Task Summary

Install, upgrade, maintain, inspect, test, adjust, and repair the measuring and control devices (electric, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic) used in Process (DCS), Fire and Gas, Emergency Control Systems and associated package controls (PLC & Turbine Control Systems). Familiar with Bailey Infi-90, ABB 800xA PPA and Symphony+ Engineering, Woodward Micro-Net, Triconex TMR, Allen Bradley PLC5/Controllogix, Modicon/Schnieder PLC's, Bently Nevada 3500/System One, and SAP. Read, understand and follow drawings, manuals, procedures and specifications. P roficiency with electronic / pneumatic / hydraulic controls and support equipment requirements associated to an offshore production facility e.g. wellhead control, liquid processing, hydraulic power units, subsea controls, gas/liquid measurement and analytical devices. Comfortable troubleshooting breakdowns, diagnosing faults, and executing repairs safely in a time sensitive operations environment. Maintaining configuration files and integrity critical documentation following clients ‘Management of Change’ process. Everyday workgroup interfacing with maintenance, operations, construction and onshore engineering teams for equipment reliability, installation and commissioning related issues. Working in confined spaces and/or at heights, noisy conditions. Work may be indoors or outdoors, at extreme temperatures.

  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy , understanding and following specifications and drawings

  • Apply mathematical formulas to solve problems

  • I nterpret and use appropriate CSA, ISA and API installation standards and practices

  • Inspect meters, indicators, and gauges to detect abnormal fluctuations

  • Tests accuracy of flow meters, pressure gauges, temperature indicators, controllers, radiation counters or detectors, and other recording, indicating or controlling instruments to locate defective components in system. Use test equipment, such as pressure gauges, mercury manometers, potentiometers, pulse and signal generators, oscilloscopes, transistor curve tracers, and ammeters, voltmeters, and watt-meters

  • Trace out and test electronic solid state and vacuum tube circuitry and components to locate defective parts in analog and digital systems, or radiation monitoring systems

  • Install, program, upgrade, test and maintain PLCs & Turbine control systems

  • Install, program, upgrade, test and maintain sensors and other control devices

  • Troubleshooting of all system components and reporting

  • Use of SAP daily

  • U se test equipment, schematics, and maintenance manuals

  • Remove defective instruments from system, decontaminate, disassemble, and clean instruments, and replace defective parts, using hand tools

  • Reassemble instruments and replace instruments using hand tools

  • Lubricate instruments and replace defective wiring and tubing

  • Calibrate readings on instruments according to standards . Adjusts phasing and align stages to ensure accuracy of recording and indicating function

  • Record calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand

  • Perform other duties as required

What makes you remarkable?

Expected:

Successful completion of 4 Period Apprenticeship in the trade, followed by Journeyperson Certification OR 3-year diploma for Instrumentation and controls technician with a minimum of 3 years post graduate experience. Experience in instrument controls, PLCs, industrial construction, maintenance, fabrication, and/or repair in an offshore production environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Must pass a site-specific drug and alcohol test, as required by the customer
  • Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50lbs
  • Must possess enough strength and stamina to perform the technical duties and essential functions as identified above
  • Able to move and work in confined spaces, following proper protocol
  • Will be required consistently to work 12hour shifts performing physical labour in varying temperature extremes and conditions
  • Must be able to climb and maintain balance on stairs, ladders, scaffolds and steel framework, utilizing proper fall arrest procedures when required. Able to safely and comfortably work at heights without posing a danger to oneself or others
  • Able to meet physical requirements of frequent walking, climbing, standing, bending, twisting and crawling for the duration of the shift

  • Basic Survival Training (BST) including HUET and HUEBA

  • Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Alive

  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015)

  • Offshore Safety Regulatory Awareness

  • Fall Protection

  • Confined Space Entry

  • Emergency First Aid
