TITLE: Aquatic Staff I – Instructor
OPERATIONS: Community Services Department
CURRENT RATE OF PAY: $25.50 per hour plus 15% in lieu of benefits
HOURS OF WORK: Up to 37.5 hours per week, pursuant to the Collective Agreement
Shift work as required
POSITION: Union Affiliation
General Statement Of Duties
This is an entry level position in which the incumbent will teach and evaluate a variety of Red Cross and/or school board swim lessons. Related duties will include cleaning and light maintenance.
Supervision
The incumbent is responsible to the Director of Community Services under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
Instructs the Canadian Red Cross Water Safety and other agency programs as well as school board lessons. Prepares lesson plans, ensures classes are taught to accepted standards and completes required candidate evaluations in a timely fashion. Completes related administrative forms and records, including Time Sheets, LogBooks etc as required. Provides professional and courteous customer service to patrons. Enforces facility rules and policies in a positive manner. Ensures lane ropes and equipment is set up for the session. Cleans and disinfects washrooms, change rooms, showers and other areas of aquatic facilities and fitness facilities. Performs janitorial and cleaning tasks as required. Works flexible and varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and split shifts, as may be necessary, to meet the requirements of the position. Reports accidents or injuries immediately to the Aquatic Coordinator and completes Incident Reports and or Work Safe BC reports. Detects and reports any hazardous conditions, practices, and behaviours in the workplace. Participates in regular in-service training. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Minimum 15 years of age. Current Certificates Swim for Life Instructor CPR Level C/AED Standard First Aid (Canadian Red Cross / Lifesaving Society) Exercises courtesy, tact, diplomacy, and persuasion with the public. Ability to communicate well with all age groups ranging from preschoolers to seniors. Ability to work as a team player within the department and overall organization. Ability to exercise sound judgment in the interpretation and application of related regulations policies and procedures. Practices and maintains skills and recertifies awards prior to their expiry dates.
