Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Alberta Environmental Services group is currently seeking an Intermediate Environmental Planner to work with our Assessment and Permitting Team. The team is based in Alberta, and while we embrace our core value that “we are better together”, we do offer flexible work solutions and hybrid work situations.

In this role, the successful candidate will provide support to all stages of a project’s lifecycle including assessment, permitting and approval requirements, construction support, and post-construction support. Working with our biological, physical sciences, human environment, and engineering teams, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading environmental assessments and permitting activities for a variety of projects focused on transmission and distribution. Typical projects include small to moderate-scale provincial oil and gas facilities, and power-related projects. We are always growing as we continue to adapt to the changing environment in which we work and are excited to work on a number of energy transition projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review environmental evaluations, regulatory applications and technical submissions.
  • Support and ensure implementation of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work and coordinate with HSSE professionals during the execution of all project phases
  • Drive project delivery with a key focus on efficient execution, project controls, and safety
  • Work in a collaborative team of technical environmental and engineering specialists to support the approval and permitting process
  • Contribute to proposals, pre- qualifications, and relationship building with existing and prospective clients
  • Communicate and collaborate with other environmental and regulatory specialists to ensure consistency in project execution
  • Participate in team and independent based work

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to work with initiative, professionalism and confidentiality, multi-task and adapt to change in a very dynamic environment
  • Willingness to share experience and support the development of junior staff
  • Strong understanding of provincial (AB) and federal regulations, environmental assessment processes, permitting requirements and construction planning needs
  • Key knowledge includes experience within one or more of the following regulatory agencies/legislation: - AUC
  • AEP
  • AER
  • EPEA
  • Public Lands Act
  • Demonstrated effective writing and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proven problem-solving skills and innovative thinking
  • Committed to providing quality deliverables in a timely manner

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences, Environmental Studies or relevant Engineering field.

Holding or eligibility to obtain a relevant professional designation (e.g., P. Bio, R.P.F., P.Ag, EP, P.Eng) preferred but, not necessary.

A minimum of 6 years of environmental and regulatory related experience in the energy sector (upstream and/or midstream oil and gas, mining, electrical transmission, power generation, energy transition).

Previous consulting experience preferred.

This role is a typical office environment, working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work and/or site visits may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
