As the Leader, Environmental Planning and Policy, you will be responsible for the strategic direction and overall management of the Environmental Planning and Policy section. This portfolio plays a key role in the sustainability and protection of Calgary's natural environment with a focus on water, land, and biodiversity. You will provide team leadership, accountability, cross-corporate and community collaboration for The City's natural environment planning and policy objectives. Primary duties include:
- Lead initiatives in the areas of water security, drought resilience, wetland conservation, biodiversity protection, watershed planning and sustainable land use to advance corporate goals and Council priorities.
- Develop and implement effective, sustainable, and inclusive policies and strategies that embed natural resource management and the provision of ecosystem services in the planning continuum, while navigating regulatory frameworks
- Foster an inclusive leadership approach that promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as psychological and physical safety. Provide strategic leadership, coaching, and mentorship to staff, overseeing recruitment and performance management to build a high-performing, engaged workforce.
- Manage the section's operating budget, optimize resources, and guide investments to ensure long-term value and sustainability.
- Oversee reports, memos, briefings, presentations and other communications to Council/committee members and senior management.
- Act as a subject matter expert on regional impacts of environmental planning and policy to provide advice and counsel regarding the identification and resolution of broad issues affecting the business and the Corporation.
- Identify, build and maintain beneficial ongoing partnerships with internal and external participants (including senior leadership, other Business Units, Council, government regulators, regional partners, external councils and associations).
Qualifications
- A graduate degree in Environmental or Urban Planning, Public Policy, Engineering, Science, Environmental Management, Biological Sciences, or a related field, and at least 8 years of related experience in environmental management strategy, planning, research, or monitoring is required.
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
- At least 5 years of leadership experience would be considered an asset.
- Success in this role requires advanced business skills and acumen; systems and critical thinking expertise in water resource management; ability to influence and negotiate; significant political acumen to balance diverse and/or competing interests; excellent communication skills; strong mentoring and leadership skills.

Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Compensation: Level M2 $133,008 - 166,260 per annum
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
