HVAC Apprenticeship Job (Age 16–19)
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. HVAC technicians work on the systems that heat, cool, and move air throughout homes, schools, stores, and other buildings.
An HVAC apprenticeship is a paid training program where you learn on the job while also taking some classes. You earn money while you learn a trade.
What You’ll Do
As an HVAC apprentice, you’ll work under experienced technicians. Your tasks may include:
Helping install heating or cooling units
Carrying tools and materials
Cutting and fitting pipes or ductwork
Connecting electrical wiring
Cleaning or maintaining HVAC equipment
Troubleshooting basic issues with supervision
Don’t worry — you start with simple tasks and increase your responsibilities as you gain experience.
How heating and air conditioning systems work
Basic plumbing and electrical skills
Safe use of hand and power tools
Problem-solving and teamwork
Reading plans/drawings, sizing systems and work instructions
Customer service and communication
There are no specific entry requirements, but applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a National 4 in:
Maths, English and a science or a technical subject
For the service and maintenance apprenticeship, it's ideal if they have National 5s and/or Highers.
