Laboratory - Histology & Cytology

Marotta Family Hospital, St. Catharines

Hours of work: 1.0 FTE

Position Objective

Functioning as a collaborative team player, the Medical Laboratory Technologist (Histology/Cytology) will support staff in delivering high-quality laboratory services to assist physicians and other health care providers in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. This includes performing laboratory testing according to legislative requirements in histology and cytology, including specimen handling, processing, and staining. The successful candidate will focus on continuous monitoring and improvement of practices to meet or exceed patient and client needs while supporting the Niagara Health mission, vision, and values and providing safe, competent patient care. The home site for this position will be the Marotta Family Hospital, with a requirement to work at two or more sites.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology or Diagnostic Cytotechnologist program
  • Current registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario, with license to practice in relevant specialties (Histology/Cytology)
  • Minimum of two years of related clinical laboratory experience in histology and cytology in a hospital environment within the past five years
  • Current knowledge and experience with preparation, testing and reporting a variety of non-gynecology specimens
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in histology specimen processing, grossing, embedding, microtomy, tissue staining, and cytology specimen preparation and testing
  • Applies knowledge, skills, judgment, and competencies required for safe, independent, and inter-disciplinary practice in accordance with professional standards outlined by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario and related professional associations
  • Applies Niagara Health values and professional and practice standards to patient care, service, and teamwork
  • Integrates reflection, critical thinking, education, and relevant practical experience in problem-solving
  • Working knowledge of computers, Laboratory Information Systems, and other hospital systems
  • Consistent and regular attendance is required
