Introduction & Key Role Objectives

WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland & the Philippines. We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering systems in various environments including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.

WJ Groundwater strives to meet client expectations for water management system performance and execute projects on time and on budget.

The principal function of the Bypass Estimator / Business Development role is to identify, develop, and secure opportunities within the temporary bypass pumping market while providing technical estimating and project support for bypass pumping applications.

This position combines technical estimating, project planning, and business development activities to support the successful delivery of bypass pumping projects. The role will involve working closely with contractors, municipalities, engineers, and internal operations teams to ensure that bypass solutions are designed, estimated, and delivered safely and efficiently.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Identify, pursue, and develop new opportunities within the temporary bypass pumping market, including municipal, civil infrastructure, and industrial projects.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with contractors, municipalities, engineers, and industry partners.
  • Conduct site visits and job walks with clients and contractors to assess project conditions and bypass requirements.
  • Evaluate client requirements and develop technical bypass pumping solutions tailored to project conditions and flow requirements.
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for bypass pumping projects, including equipment, piping, labour, and operational requirements.
  • Assist clients and contractors with system sizing, routing, and implementation strategies for temporary pumping systems.
  • Recommend appropriate pumping equipment, piping layouts, and system configurations based on project requirements.
  • Support projects from the initial estimating phase through project completion to ensure successful project delivery and client satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with operations teams to ensure proper equipment availability, scheduling, and installation requirements.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients throughout the project lifecycle and address any project challenges that may arise.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to internal sales staff and project teams on bypass pumping applications and best practices.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of internal estimating procedures, technical documentation, and operational best practices.
  • Participate in industry events, client meetings, and professional development activities to support market growth and company visibility.
  • Be responsible for own health and safety and ensure that all bypass pumping solutions are developed and executed in accordance with WJ safety standards and procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A motivated and hardworking individual with good written and communication skills is essential.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental) or a related field.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in bypass pumping, fluid handling, dewatering, or municipal infrastructure projects is required.

  • Experience estimating and planning temporary pumping or wastewater bypass systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, plans, and project specifications.

  • Experience working with contractors, municipalities, and infrastructure projects.

  • Strong technical problem-solving and solution development abilities.

  • Experience with cost estimating, project planning, and proposal preparation.

  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills.

  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with clients and industry partners.

  • Ability to manage multiple opportunities and projects simultaneously.

  • Competent user of Microsoft Office software and related estimating or project management tools.

Working Conditions

This role is primarily based at our head office but requires site visits for client meetings, site inspections, inductions, and project briefings, with occasional full-day work on client worksites. The role involves visiting construction sites, municipal infrastructure projects, and industrial facilities where temporary pumping systems are installed. Comfort working outdoors in diverse field environments, including active construction sites, and in all weather conditions is essential.

Standard working hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with occasional flexibility needed.
