About the Role:

Reporting to the Manager Services and Supports, the Overnight Awake will provide support to ensure the safety, comfort, well-being and security of each supported person during the overnight hours. The support provided must also align with the values of Kerry’s Place Autism Services and meet the goals and expectations of the agency. The Overnight Awake employee, along with their team, provides services aimed at maximizing health and safety and personal fulfillment of people with Autism. Responsibilities may include:

  • Ensure continuity of care by confirming adequate staffing at the end of shift remaining on duty until relief staff arrives
  • Obtain a complete update of all Individual’s concerning the overnight shift from the outgoing evening staff
  • During designated awake hours, remain alert, responsive, and actively engaged in assigned work duties
  • As requested, ensure the safety and well-being of individuals through periodic check throughout the respective shift
  • Should individuals arise throughout the night, respond and attend to any resulting problems in the manner specified in the individual's personal behaviour guidelines. Record all unexpected incidents in the communication book. Ensure day shift is properly apprised of such incidents
  • Provide solutions to barriers impacting achievement of quality of life
  • Provide appropriate supports, tools, etc. to ensure the health and safety of the people supported.
  • Ensure compliance to Policies and Procedures associated with Health and Safety and Abuse Prevention
  • Ensure that, Behaviour Support Plan and skill-building strategies are consistently implemented, as directed by the Clinical Therapist and/or the Clinical Supervisor (Registered Behaviour Analyst), as well as the manager. Observation of implementation and supervision of Clinical support strategies will occur using the method and frequency appropriate for the needs of the individual
  • Provide support and coaching in the areas of: social skills, communication, vocation, daily living skills and leisure activities
  • Ensure the work area is clean and safe; correct or report any safety concerns immediately
  • Use Kerry’s Place Autism Services resources in a cost effective and efficient manner
  • Ensure accuracy and timely completion of documentation for legislative and policy and procedures requirements, such as: individual’s files, health records, Person Directed Plans, data collection, etc.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with: families, natural supports, volunteers, professionals, community members and other people you interact with in the course of your work
  • Administer medication according to Kerry’s Place Autism Services Policy and Procedure
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Developmental Service Worker Diploma from a recognized Community College or Human Services Diploma/Degree from a recognized Community College or University or a Personal Support Worker certificate from a Community College or from a registered and Ministry approved Private Career College; or
  • Completion of Ontario Secondary School (or equivalent) and 1 year of related experience (preferably supporting people with Autism)

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Solid communication skills both oral and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity and sound judgment
  • Self motivated and demonstrated ability to motivate others
  • French language is an asset

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to physically support adults with Autism
  • Must have the ability to perform the required physical techniques of NVCI training from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). Training will be provided
  • Position requires ability to work flexible and overnight working hours and ability to travel as required
  • This is an overnight position, and on-site sleeping accommodations are available to support rest during designated overnight sleep hours
  • A valid Driver's License, with a minimum G2 and access to a reliable vehicle is required and proof of third part liability insurance coverage
  • As a condition of employment, employees must be able to provide a Driver's Abstract in good standing with fewer than three demerit points

Welcome to Kerry’s Place Autism Services. We are Canada’s largest service provider to families with children, adolescents, and adults, with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Since 1974 Kerry’s Place has been creating, and providing evidence-based supports and services across the province of Ontario that enhance the quality of life of those with ASD.

Through the Ontario Autism Program, we provide children and youth - and their families - a menu of timely, evidence-based services needed to achieve their goals at home, at school, and within their communities. This initiative serves individuals with ASD up to age 18, delivering skill-building groups, individual consultation, and family support.

We provide numerous Community Services and Supports, including our day and overnight respite options to provide a well-deserved break for families with loved ones with Autism, along with our many camps and leisure groups.

Our Adult Skill-Building and Peer Support Groups broaden the social circle for every individual we support. Our Employment Programs lend assistance to young adults with Autism to help develop skills that lead to meaningful employment opportunities.

We provide adults with ASD Residential and Semi-Independent Living Supports at 90 distinct properties across Ontario. Our group living approach provides a safe, 24 hour, home environment where residents are encouraged to pursue their own personal goals including outings into the community, employment, and an array of interests. Many of our residence grow with Kerry’s Place, spending upwards of 30 years with us. And through a lifetime of shared pursuits and generational experiences, we too, grow with them.
