About the role

Job Overview / Purpose

The Director Operations Finance, Property Accounting leads the Property Accounting team, providing financial management and leadership for Retirement properties. The role oversees the preparation of the monthly property financial statements, reviews monthly working paper files, and ensures the completion of all required financial regulatory filings with health authorities. As the Operations Finance lead, the Director also supports interim reviews and annual audits.

Key Accountabilities

Financial Oversight

  • Oversee monthly journal entries to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Lead the preparation and review of financial reporting.
  • Review monthly working papers and reconciliations, identifying and reporting risks, issues, and areas of concern.
  • Provide oversight for the completion of financial regulatory filings and audits with health authorities and government agencies. Drive efficiency and automation initiatives within the Property Accounting team.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Oversee budget preparation for residences in collaborations with the Strategic Planning & Decision Support, Shared Services, and Operations teams. Review operating budgets for funded revenue and expenses with health authorities.

Regulatory Compliance & Audit

  • Coordinate financial regulatory filings with the health authorities.
  • Maintain and update systems of internal controls for all areas of accountability. Act as liaison with auditors, external advisors, and internal stakeholders during quarterly reviews and annual audits.

Operational & Administrative Leadership

  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of all financial reporting.
  • Oversee monthly financial statements, variance reports, and cash flow monitoring.
  • Lead the financial integration of newly acquired properties and support acquisition or disposition processes as required. Perform other duties as required.

People Leadership:

  • Lead, engage, and develop the Property Accounting team through effective recruitment, onboarding, training, coaching, and career development.
  • Foster a high-performance culture that supports collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Provide guidance to Director of Operations & Sales, and Vice President Operations & Sales on financial processes. Build strong relationships across all levels of the organization.

Department Leadership (as applicable)

  • Develop and execute department goals, priorities, and initiatives aligned with Chartwell’s business plan and corporate strategy.
  • Establish and monitor performance metrics to drive accountability and continuous improvement within the Property Accounting team
  • Ensure department resources, systems, and processes are optimized to meet service level targets. Lead cross-functional collaboration with Corporate, Operations, Business Services, Shared Services, and Financial Planning and Analysis teams to achieve shared objectives.

Qualifications

Education:

  • University degree in Business, Finance, or related field. Professional accounting designation (CA, CPA, CGA, CMA) or equivalent work experience.

Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience in financial management positions.
  • 5-10 years of experience in accounting or finance roles. Related industry experience preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of IFRS and Canadian GAAP (required).
  • Knowledge of industry-specific accounting principles (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of provincial funding models and policies for the Retirement sector (required).
  • Knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act, OLTC Act, Program Manual, and similar legislation in other jurisdictions.
  • Proficiency in ERP software and Microsoft Office (required).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment. Self-motivated, innovative, and solutions-oriented.

Effort

  • Requires sustained attention to detail, reviewing and reconciling complex financial data.
  • Frequent computer use with prolonged sitting, keyboarding, and report preparation. Occasional standing, walking, and attendance at meetings.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment with periods of high workload and multiple demands.

  • Occasional travel to properties and external meetings.

  • Flexibility to work irregular hours when required.
