Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

The Fort Smith Highway Maintenance Facility responsible for the maintenance of approximately 164 kilometers (km) Northwest Territories (NWT) highway and local roads, and 200km of road within the Wood Buffalo National Park and the Province of Alberta.

The Highway Maintenance Operator (HMO) primarily maintains all asphalt and gravel surfaces, signs, right-of-way, drainage system and the ancillary infrastructure. The HMO will also perform general maintenance and assist other Department Divisions in the repair and maintenance of infrastructure. Follows the Preventative Maintenance Program for mobile equipment and ancillary infrastructure is maintained and expected life cycle is attained.

Typically qualification would be attained by:

A grade 10 education coupled with 1 year of highway construction experience

Valid Class 1 drivers' license with airbrake endorsement

Ability to acquire Restricted Radio Operator's License and Vehicle Operator's License

Ability to attain WHMIS Certification and First Aid and CPR certification.
