Job Description

Job Summary:

Responsible for leading financial accounting, reporting and analysis for various financial reporting, tax, accounting, compliance and financial analysis areas. Demonstrate specialized knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, financial policies and procedures. Providing full accounting services and reporting for external corporations and agencies. Act as a subject matter expert on financial reporting, accounting, tax and compliance.

Job Functions:

  • Prepare year-end working papers for annual University financial statement audit and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Coordinate and lead year end activities related to specific financial reporting areas (i.e., tuition revenue, operating grants, accrued liabilities). Coordinate deliverables with relevant department representative.
  • Responsible for overseeing the design of Financial Reporting database structure to fit reporting and compliance needs for specific reporting areas.
  • Coach and mentor junior staff in order to ensure a highly motivated and technically competent team. Including direct training of student employees.
  • Responsible for collaborating with relevant department representative on discrepancies to understand the underlying nature of the activity and determine root causes, performing review based on key guidance and working with parties to ensure appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Key contact and help lead surveys and financial reporting required by external agencies (including COU, CRA)
  • Educate and inform faculty, staff, and researchers of tax, financial reporting, compliance guidance and advice
  • Develop customized complex spreadsheets for ad-hoc reports, queries, and financial analysis.
  • Works with relevant department representatives to identify, develop, recommend and implement structures, policies, processes, programs and resources to ensure accurate, consistent and complete external financial reporting.
  • Responsible for planning key inputs with workback schedules, compiling information, and collaborating department representatives as well as external consultants for various annual and quarterly financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with department representatives to ensure information provided meets new compliance guidelines, guiding them through systems to capture accurate and applicable data.
  • Apply specialized tax knowledge and accounting principles to review, interpret and provide recommendations on accounting, tax, and compliance treatment.
  • Prepare written financial results reports, financial statements and consolidate financial schedules for submission.
  • Determine year-end close adjustments including accruals, journal entries and business unit transfers
  • Prepare analysis of year-end position in comparison to year-over-year actuals, and explain variances
  • Provide advice and training on topics including but not limited to: financial transactions, business processes and functional system requirements
  • Analyze business processes to ensure efficiency and proper controls for accurate financial reporting and the safeguarding of assets. Recommend changes to improve processes.
  • Provide recommendations, input and support during system enhancements, upgrades and changes to departmental processes and procedures.
  • Remain current on University policies, changes in tax legislation, accounting guidelines and software upgrades.

Supervision:

  • Provide functional guidance to others on an ongoing basis
  • Ensures adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.

  • Possesses or is working towards a professional accounting designation.

  • Requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
