About the role
To ensure the proper acceptance, storage, handling, loading of dangerous goods and the correctness and retention of related documents required by legislation and FedEx policy. To handle spills of dangerous goods and respond to questions from staff and customers on the handling of dangerous goods. To provide awareness training to other staff.
Essential Functions
- Determines acceptability of declared dangerous goods packages via visual inspection and use of checklist.
- Monitors other packages for potentially dangerous goods via visual inspection, handling, and accompanying paperwork. With the manager’s consent, opens packages if safe and necessary. Identifies rejected shipments and process accordingly.
- Makes allowable entries into dangerous goods airbills and shippers’ declarations. Sorts packages according to destination and split list.
- Pulls proper copies of airbills and declarations, sorts batches, and redirects copies for dangerous goods manifesting. Reviews and prepares load manifests, transport documents of outbound vehicles, and aircraft. Maintains all files for dangerous goods paperwork as required by FedEx, FAA, and Transport Canada.
- Monitors handling of dangerous goods through the station or ramp. Loads or oversees loading of dangerous goods into vehicles and aircraft. Audits inbound vehicles and flights for compliance with applicable laws and FedEx policy.
- Cleans up or ensures proper response to all dangerous goods spills in vehicles, aircraft, or facilities. Ensures proper containment and disposal according to applicable laws and policies. Gives direction to management and staff as required in these matters. Acts as liaison with safety and other departments, as required.
- Performs warehouse checks for consolidation and coordination of DG/Dry Ice packages.
- Maintains all dangerous goods manuals and supplies.
- Completes daily reports for roll over DG packages that need update from others (Customer Service Rep) and any concern that needs to be followed up through incident report.
- Properly manages regulated waste for repacking, labeling, storage, and preparation for offsite disposal in compliance with applicable laws and FedEx policies. Additional Operations essential functions:
- Provides clerical support to various management and operational functions, including, but not limited to, photocopying, filing, faxing, emailing, and answering telephone.
- Reviews, researches, and/or enters data into various systems to support respective functional area.
- Compiles data and provides various regular and ad-hoc reports to management for review and determination.
- Serves as frontline customer service to receive, solve and/or escalate customer inquiries and issues. Additional Quality Assurance/Loss Prevention essential functions:
- Supports ability for timely delivery and mitigates loss and damage by performing address searches/corrections through various sources and ensuring packages are in good condition for the customer.
- Prioritizes workflow to maximize the number of packages that can be resolved and sent out for delivery on the same day.
- Ensures all packages receive appropriate scan statuses. Inspects and handles hazardous material damages as per policy. Ensures all loose product is accounted for as per company policy.
- Researches missing packages to understand the root cause of scanning failures and compiles information on disputed deliveries for management review.
- Reviews and trends loss and damaged claims filed to identify improperly charged claims and brings to the attention of management. Specific to Ramp employees:
- Works with Ramp Agents to transmit flight auto DG to Weights & Balance (W&B).
- Builds and ties down dangerous goods shipments into ULD (Unit Load Device) for aircraft onload.
- Engages Halon hose onboard aircraft.
- Presents DG shipments to flight crew onboard aircraft.
- Signs aircraft DG manifest paperwork for flight folder.
- Must be able to pass the Transport Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canada Security Intelligence Assessment (CISIS) assessments.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum Experience
- Six (6) months FedEx experience preferred
- Must successfully complete all basic and recurrent training and dangerous goods specialist certification Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to successfully obtain and maintain FedEx DG Specialist certification. Ability to successfully complete all basic and recurrent training. Must be able to complete all required certifications as per job requirements. If working on the ramp, must pass the Transport Canada, RCMP and CISIS assessment.
- Knowledge of FedEx internal systems that apply to the job, i.e. Enterprise Operational Portal (OPS), AutoDG, trace, GENESIS and other FedEx operating systems, preferred.
- General business skills such as typing; data entry and review; and use of office equipment, such as phone and copier
- Software skills, including use of Microsoft Office software and web-based applications
- Ability to read, write, communicate, and comprehend English required to ensure compliance to applicable regulations. If residing in the province of Quebec, must be bilingual (French and English)
- Customer service skills necessary to respond to requests effectively, professionally and in a timely manner. Listens and responds with empathy
- Verbal and written communication and presentation skills necessary to communicate with all levels of management
- Time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills necessary to work in a fast-paced environment, handling various tasks and changing priorities, while maintaining a high attention to detail and accuracy to achieve goals
