About the Opportunity

The City of Owen Sound is hiring for multiple Temporary Seasonal Winter Control positions to support safe and efficient winter maintenance across city infrastructure and public spaces. These roles are essential to keeping our sidewalks, pathways, parks, and facilities safe and accessible during the winter months.

Available Positions

  • Manual Snow Removal – Public Works (4 positions)
  • Sidewalk Plow Operator – Public Works (5 positions)
  • Winter Attendant – Parks & Open Space (2 positions)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform snow removal using manual tools and equipment across sidewalks, parking lots, alleys, trails, and other public areas.
  • Operate sidewalk plows and salting equipment.
  • Maintain winter operations in parks and open spaces, including outdoor rinks, cemeteries, trails, and public washrooms.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned to support winter safety and accessibility.

Experience Required:

Previous snow removal experience, including use of relevant equipment

Additional Skills and Competencies required:

  • Valid Ontario G Driver’s License and provide a clean drivers abstract;
  • Trained in and has ability to operate equipment and tools safely including but not limited to sidewalk plow, salting devices, snow blowers, and shovels.
  • Ability to operate a tractor equipped with a front-end loader proficiently or be willing to learn.
  • Basic computer skills. Ability to open, read and comprehend electronic messaging. Ability to track work codes using computerized software.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, traffic control procedures and Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 practices;
  • Basic knowledge and experience in best practices in snow removal and salt/sand application for urban settings;
  • Physical ability to lift 50 to 70lbs and complete repetitive snow shoveling tasks and duties.
  • Knowledge of the City’s road and sidewalk system.
  • Internal Candidates must have satisfactory attendance and performance records with the City

Salary Range: $27.66/hr - $29.51/hr (wage rate dependent on position)

Hours of work: Typically 40hrs/week – Shift schedule may vary depending on work assignments to cover 7 day a week operation
