The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our Information Technology (IT) team in Toronto, Ontario .

This is a permanent hybrid (4 days in office per week) position, working a Monday to Friday schedule .

As a Senior Data Scientist , you will play a pivotal role in advancing Vale Base Metals’ data science capabilities. You will focus on predictive modeling, optimization, and advanced analytics to support operational excellence in mining and heavy industry. This role involves applying statistical and machine learning techniques to large-scale industrial datasets, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and translating complex analytical findings into actionable insights for engineering, operations, and executive stakeholders.

Additionally, in this position you will:

Strategy & Leadership

  • Shape the strategy and technology direction for data science across the organization
  • Align initiatives with operational KPIs and strategic business goals
  • Lead innovation through exploratory projects and emerging technologies
  • Influence high-impact decisions via predictive modeling and analytics

Architecture & Platform Enablement

  • Design scalable data science architecture using Azure, AWS, Spark, and Databricks
  • Integrate models into production systems using MLflow, Airflow, Kubernetes
  • Enable analytics through platforms supporting Python, R, SQL, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, XGBoost
  • Support real-time data ingestion, IoT telemetry, and geospatial analytics

Use Case Delivery & Automation

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of AI use cases from ideation to scale
  • Drive automation of tasks and processes using AI agents

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Implement frameworks for responsible AI, data integrity, and compliance (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)
  • Define policies for data security, privacy, and ethical AI use

Process Optimization & Reengineering

  • Reengineer workflows for automation and AI integration
  • Apply frameworks like APQC and Signavio for process standardization

Vendor & Partner Management

  • Manage relationships with AI vendors and consulting partners
  • Coordinate globally to ensure strategic alignment and avoid duplication

Performance & Value Realization

  • Track business impact of AI initiatives using benefits realization frameworks
  • Document value propositions, cost estimates, and timelines for each use case

Team Development & Capability Building

  • Build and lead cross-functional teams of AI developers, data scientists, and architects
  • Mentor junior staff and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement

Innovation & Thought Leadership

  • Stay ahead of trends like GenAI, Agentic AI, and AI Mesh
  • Educate stakeholders on AI’s potential and limitations

About You Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Management preferred
  • Professional certification in data management or database administration or Advanced analtyics certifications preferred

Experience:

  • Over 15 years in data science, AI, or related roles
  • Proven experience with GenAI, agentic AI, ML Ops, cloud platforms, and automation frameworks

Skills:

  • Expertise in SAP Joule, Microsoft Copilot, ML Ops, and cloud infrastructure
  • Experience with OT and IoT data for predictive analytics
  • Strong understanding of data security, privacy regulations, and compliance
  • Strategic thinking and effective communication with business stakeholders
  • Skilled in change management and stakeholder engagement
