Position Summary
Regular Part-Time Support Staff, new position
(First consideration for support staff and academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective collective agreements)
The Part-Time Instructional Designer supports the development, including developmental editing of high-quality, accessible Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access projects. Working closely with faculty subject matter experts and project stakeholders, the Instructional Designer contributes to the design, development, and delivery of engaging digital learning resources that align with academic quality standards, accessibility requirements, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the department’s needs through a hybrid work arrangement, Monday to Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with one day on-site at the Doon campus located at 299 Doon Valley Drive in Kitchener, and three days remote.
Responsibilities
Instructional design and content development
Collaborate with faculty subject matter experts, project leads, the OER Consultant, Library Services staff, and the Copyright Coordinator to design and develop digital learning resources using platforms such as Pressbooks and H5P Review OER and Open Access projects for content quality, readability, accessibility, copyright compliance, Creative Commons attribution through developmental editing processes Design engaging learning experiences through the effective use of instructional strategies, multimedia, and interactive content Develop instructional materials, including reflective activities, scripts, presentations, test banks, instructional guides, and other supporting resources Create instructional content based on subject matter provided by faculty experts Apply instructional design best practices, accessibility standards, AODA requirements, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles Develop project documentation, including content maps, design documents, recommendations, and storyboards Write scripts for educational audio, video, and multimedia content Apply HTML and CSS knowledge to support accessibility and content presentation requirements Advise faculty on the effective use of educational technologies, multimedia, and digital learning tools Stay current with developments in learning theory, educational technology, accessibility, and digital publishing practices Review and edit OER and Open Access projects for content quality, readability, accessibility, copyright compliance, and Creative Commons attribution Apply technical writing principles to present complex information clearly and effectively Ensure content adheres to APA (7th edition) and other applicable style guides Recommend copyright-compliant solutions for text, images, and multimedia assets Review and update metadata within online publishing platforms Conduct accessibility testing using tools such as JAWS and recommend or implement required improvements
Project coordination
Support project planning and scheduling Facilitate meetings with subject matter experts throughout the project lifecycle Monitor project milestones and support project teams in meeting established timelines Organize and maintain project materials, including content structures, design documentation, recommendations, and storyboards
Qualifications
A three-year diploma or degree in Adult Education, Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Publishing, Communications, Training and Development or a related field is required Minimum five years of experience using project management and instructional design expertise in an academic, online learning, eLearning, instructional design, digital resources related field, including experience in script writing/production of media artifacts or interactive learning objects, is required Excellent understanding of adult education principles and Universal Design for Learning, with knowledge of current open technologies and publishing platforms Experienced in educational publishing processes Ability to assist faculty in defining instructional, curriculum, and assessment elements Strong creative writing skills with the ability to decipher complex content and convert it into meaningful chunks of information Experience incorporating technology and media to enhance instructional methods and improve the learners' educational experience Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously using appropriate project management tools and techniques Proven skill in communicating effectively and building relationships with clients
