The British Society of Gastroenterology is a professional body established to promote gastroenterology across the UK.

Founded in 1937, we represent over three thousand members in medical professions including physicians, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, scientists, nurses and dietitians.

We work to represent our members within the British Royal Colleges and also to the Department of Health and Government. Internationally, we are represented at World and European level through The World Gastroenterology Organisation and United European Gastroenterology.

Alongside representation, we support new and original research within the field of gastroenterology, promoting high standards and by providing a platform for scientific publication, discussion and promotion.

Research conducted by sections of the BSG is also supported indirectly by our affiliated charity CORE. Our work to support and promote best practice is exemplary, regularly producing guidelines on aspects of contemporary practice.

Our annual scientific meeting brings together thousands from the speciality, providing an opportunity for the presentation original papers to the wider gastroenterology and hepatology community.

The BSG co-owns three publications:

  • Gut, Europe's highest ranked gastroenterology journal by citation-related impact factor
  • Frontline Gastroenterology, which focuses on clinical aspects of Gastroenterology
  • BMJ Open Gastroenterology, an open access journal
