About the role
We are seeking a Senior Building Inspector to join our team. This is a complex supervisory and inspectional role responsible for leading a team of trades inspectors in conducting building and plumbing inspections and ensuring compliance with related bylaws. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the enforcement of building codes and regulations while supervising a dedicated team of professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of a group of trades inspectors and clerical staff.
- Participate in the selection of new staff and ensure adequate training for all subordinates.
- Conduct building inspections for special projects, sensitive sites, or to cover staff shortages.
- Provide guidance and assistance to building inspectors in resolving complex and controversial issues.
- Liaise with other departments and meet with owners, contractors, tradesmen, and architects to resolve problems and address complaints.
- Advise on bylaws and procedures and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Recommend changes to regulations and bylaws as appropriate.
- Participate on committees and projects related to building inspection work.
- Prepare detailed reports and maintain a variety of files and records related to inspections.
- Recommend prosecution for non-compliance and provide evidence in court as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of building inspection techniques, principles, and practices.
- Extensive understanding of bylaws, regulations, codes, and standards governing building inspections.
- Strong supervisory skills with the ability to manage and mentor a team.
- Excellent communication skills for liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors and building owners.
- Problem-solving abilities to address complex or sensitive inspection issues.
- Judgement and decision-making skills to enforce regulations impartially and professionally.
Desired Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 education, with completion of post-secondary courses in building construction technology.
- BOABC Plumbing Official Level 1 Certification.
- Significant experience as a Building Inspector, including some supervisory experience and training.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may also be considered.
Required Licenses and Certifications
- BOABC Building Official Level 3 Certification.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
The City of Delta provides a competitive salary of $49.65 - $58.66 (commensurate with experience); and an excellent benefits package including Municipal Pension Plan.
