The Rocky Mountain House Museum is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and sharing the rich history of the West Country. Through engaging exhibits, educational programming, and the stewardship of significant artifacts and archives, the museum connects people with the stories that have shaped our region. Position Summary
The Rocky Mountain House Museum is seeking an energetic and visionary General Manager to lead the organization into its next chapter. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager provides strategic leadership while overseeing the museum's daily operations, financial sustainability, collections stewardship, exhibitions, visitor experiences, community engagement, and staff leadership. This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative leader who is passionate about heritage, community development, and creating innovative experiences that connect people with history.
Key Responsibilities
Provide leadership for the museum's day-to-day operations and long-term strategic direction. Supervise, mentor, and support staff, volunteers, and contractors while fostering a positive and collaborative workplace culture. Research, prepare, and submit grant applications to municipal, provincial, federal, and private funding agencies while identifying new funding opportunities that support the museum's strategic priorities, exhibitions, educational programming, collections care, capital improvements, and long-term sustainability. Identify and pursue grant opportunities, sponsorships, fundraising initiatives, and partnerships that support the museum's mission. Work closely with the Board of Directors to implement strategic priorities, governance policies, and organizational objectives. Lead the planning and delivery of engaging exhibitions, educational programming, and public events. Ensure the professional stewardship, documentation, and preservation of museum collections and archives. Promote the museum through community outreach, marketing initiatives, public presentations, and media engagement. Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities, local governments, tourism partners, educational institutions, businesses, and community organizations. Ensure the museum remains a welcoming, accessible, and exceptional destination for visitors.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess many of the following qualifications: Experience leading a museum, cultural organization, heritage institution, nonprofit, or comparable organization. Demonstrated leadership in operations management, staff supervision, and organizational development. Demonstrated experience researching, writing, and administering successful grant applications, along with skills in budgeting, financial reporting, fundraising, and developing diverse revenue sources. Experience developing strategic partnerships and engaging diverse community stakeholders. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of museum collections management, exhibitions, archival practices, or heritage interpretation is considered an asset. Experience with marketing, communications, social media, and digital engagement. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. Post-secondary education in museum studies, history, arts administration, business, nonprofit management, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for events, meetings, and community activities.
Compensation
Salary is competitive and negotiable based on the successful candidate's qualifications, experience, and demonstrated skills.
