**Location -**This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
Reporting to the Acting Manager, Orientation and Transition Programs, this position has an operational focus and is accountable for developing, coordinating, and assessing all aspects of centralized orientation and transition programming for students at the University of Alberta.
The Coordinator, Orientation and Transition Programs (COTP), will engage with campus orientation program coordinators to support a holistic orientation and transition curriculum that prioritizes universal design principles, adopts a student-centred approach, and aligns with the institution’s core values.
The COTP will implement, develop, and support a variety of orientation and transition initiatives within the Orientation and Transition Programs office, which contribute to student success. The COTP’s initial focus will be on supporting the development and implementation of a student online orientation program.
Other initiatives may include extended orientation programming, orientation recruitment events, and programming to support year-over-year transitions in students’ academic journeys.
The COTP will work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to develop and coordinate orientation programming that reflects the diverse student population and is intersectional in nature. This will include working with campus and community experts to cultivate orientation programming rooted in access, community, and belonging, and to implement intentional programming for traditionally underrepresented student communities during orientation.
The COTP will serve as a central point of contact for student orientation and transition across campus, supporting student transition at the University of Alberta. This role is responsible for collaborating with subject-matter experts and conducting ongoing assessments to align campus orientation and transition programming with current trends and best practices. The COTP will be a member of the Orientation Network, which regularly meets with orientation program coordinators and other campus partners.
This position is crucial to supporting students' transition experience and, in turn, the overall mission of Student Success & Experience to support student success and well-being.
Student Success and Experience (formerly Office of the Dean of Students) holds student support at the heart of everything we do. We provide services focused on student well-being and flourishing both in the classroom and beyond. We offer a wide range of services, including career guidance, health and wellness resources, academic support, and assistance for students facing unexpected challenges or personal difficulties. Develop, implement, and assess centralized in-person and virtual orientation programming for all new incoming students.

Manage the logistics of orientation and transition programming, including risk management protocols, catering, and program accommodations.

Create online orientation content in collaboration with campus and external partners to disseminate key information to new incoming students.

Develop, implement, and assess centralized extended orientation programming for all new incoming students throughout the academic year.

Liaise with key campus partners, including student associations, to develop orientation programming that reflects the diverse student population through targeted, intentional events and curricula for non-traditional student orientation experiences and underrepresented student communities.

Develop, implement, and assess centralized in-person and virtual transition programming for all students throughout the academic year. This may include programs targeted toward students preparing to graduate and students transitioning to their next academic or professional step.

Support the coordination of transition programming across campus by facilitating campus-wide meetings that bring together partners who implement transition-related programming and support.

Undergraduate degree in a related field and at least two years of experience working in a student affairs environment, preferably in the field of orientation, transition, and retention.

Experience with program planning, event management, and program curriculum development, particularly in a post-secondary setting.

Experience planning programs and/or student success initiatives with diverse student populations.

Knowledge of best practices for adult learning and education.

Comprehensive knowledge of the student life cycle and student needs throughout a university program.

Ability to effectively communicate across various interested groups, including faculty, community partners, and students.

Proven ability to work collaboratively with team members from other areas, coordinating orientation and transition initiatives.

High level of critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills to make sound judgments when leading student activities.

Ability to deal with diverse issues, multitask, and prioritize.

Knowledge of a wide variety of resources on campus and in the community.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Proficiency with computers, including the Google suite, and a web-based database.

Ability to work independently and cohesively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Openness to receive ongoing training in student learning and development, program planning, and evaluation.
