PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Reporting to the Director of Care and under general direction of Clinical Nursing Leaders, the Staff Nurse is responsible for the daily nursing care of Residents. Care services are delivered within the framework of an elderly, predominantly-Jewish community with diverse ethnic and cultural experiences.
Within the context of a client and family centered care model, and in accordance with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) standards of practice, Codes of Ethics, and the established vision and values of the organization, provides nursing care for clients within an residential care facility setting by working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Enhances the quality of life from the perspective of the resident/family, and consults, confers, and collaborates with team members and other health care givers. Demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice and maintains and advances clinical competence
RESPONSIBILITIES

Evaluates residents' care needs by assessing residents on admission, and on an ongoing basis.

Develops appropriate nursing care plans in conjunction with Interdisciplinary Team; sets goals with the residents in relation to problems/needs as identified through assessments; evaluates care plans, and makes changes when necessary.

Ensures safety of residents during all tasks; reports any adverse events or near-misses to supervisor immediately.

Carries out orders specified in the care plan, and administers direct nursing care, including direct "hands on" ADL tasks e.g. transferring, feeding, bathing, toileting residents.

Receives physicians' orders; arranges for treatments, medications and other therapeutic services as needed. Liaises with families, physicians, visiting treatment agencies, as necessary.

Dispenses medications (using eMAR system) to residents; controls narcotics in accordance with established procedures.

Maintains unit records and residents' charts according to established format and facility guidelines (i.e. MDS, Point Click Care, and Excelleris).

Guides clinical experience of assigned new nursing staff and students; provides input to the nursing leaders as requested on individual’s progress in achieving established standards of nursing care.

Monitors efficient use of equipment and supplies on unit; reports equipment malfunctions and/or supplies needed.

Attends Staff Development and In-service education programs as required.

Provides input in development of resident care policies and procedures, as well as those, which pertain to safety of residents and staff. Participates in projects, studies and initiatives for improvement of care and services.

Provides leadership in interdisciplinary meetings, as necessary. Serves on other Committees where appropriate.

Assists with orientation of new residents and of new staff when necessary.

Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduated of an approved School of Nursing and one year’s recent related experience supplemented by current registration with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Long Term Care / Gerontology training and experience is required.
- Standard First Aid and CPR (C) required.
- PCC (Point Click Care) experience is preferred.
