Overview of role: As WestJet continues its journey to unlock the full potential of our data, we are seeking a Data Governance Analyst to expand the Data Governance team. We are looking for a person with high attention to detail, high organizational skills, and a passion for data and governance. To be successful in this role, you must be comfortable speaking to and persuading both business users and technical users, and have strong communication skills.
As a Data Governance Analyst, you will impact the way that all WestJetters interact with data. You will help drive efficiency by ensuring that our data users know where to find our data, know how to access our data, can trust our data, and are using our data securely. This role will be instrumental in enabling data-driven business analytics and insights throughout the enterprise. You will be working across all business units to educate data users and onboard data assets to our governance program; you will help define, implement, and enforce data governance policies, processes, and tools across the enterprise; and you will work directly with Data Stewards and Data Custodians to guide them through our established governance practices such as access and usage approvals and data issue management.

Key deliverables and responsibilities include:
- Document and support frameworks, standards, processes, guidelines, and user guides for data governance operations and tools.
- Implement and ensure adherence to Data Governance policies and processes.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance, and administration of Data Governance tools and workflows, including Data Catalog, Business Glossary, access request workflows, etc.
- Promote data governance within the organization by developing an inclusive environment for responsible use of data and education on data literacy.
- Contribute to the onboarding and training of business units to the Data Governance program.
- Schedule and facilitate meetings with Data Trustees, Data Stewards, and Data Custodians to guide and educate them through the Data Governance program.
- Track, monitor, and report on Data Governance metrics and KPIs.
- Work with Legal, Cybersecurity, and Risk and Compliance teams to ensure alignment across all of our data policies and processes.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest data regulatory standards such as GDPR, PCI DSS, and PIPEDA.
- Participate in Scrum ceremonies as part of the overall Data Governance team.
- Support other Data Governance team members as needed, and seek support from other Data Governance team members as needed.
Qualifications: Our ideal candidate covers 80% of the following, but we value your skills and potential more than your credentials. We are looking for people who are curious, adaptable, and willing to take on new challenges. - 3+ years of experience working with data governance frameworks and stewardship, or 5+ years of related technical experience.
- Experience implementing data governance tooling (e.g. data catalogs, business glossaries, access controls), preference for Purview.
- Experience defining, implementing, and enforcing processes and policies at a large enterprise organization.
- Experience working with all levels of business and technical stakeholders across a large enterprise.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Intuition for “knowing your audience”, and ability to adjust messaging and communication style according to role (executive, management, individual contributor) and technical knowledge (business, analytics, architects, etc.).
- Experience with industry data management toolsets, ETL processes, data quality management, master data management and meta-data management.
- Understanding of data lifecycle, including creation, storage, ETL/ELT, retention, deletion.
- Experience working in data projects using Agile methodologies.
- Combination of education, certifications, and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a technical field.
Nice to have any of the following qualifications:
- Creating workflows using Microsoft Power Automate.
- Data modelling experience.
- Experience developing and using third-party APIs.
- Experience in organizational change management.
- Familiarity with any of Snowflake, WhereScape, Databricks, SQL Server, Azure SQL, ADLS, ADF, Azure Synapse, PowerBI, Tableau.
