About the role

Position: Director - Quality, Risk, Patient Experience & Patient Flow Department: Clinical Services

Reporting to the Vice President Clinical & Chief Nursing Executive, the Director provides strategic and operational leadership to advance excellence in quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, patient experience, and system-wide patient flow across North Bay Regional Health Centre.

The role supports the organization in achieving its strategic priorities through evidence-informed decision-making, meaningful patient and family engagement, effective enterprise risk management, and optimized transitions across the continuum of care.

Working collaboratively with senior leaders, physicians, managers, frontline teams, patients and families, and community partners, the Director provides leadership to ensure the organization delivers safe, high-quality, equitable, and efficient care aligned with provincial standards, regulatory expectations, and organizational priorities.

The Director oversees a specialized team supporting quality improvement, risk management, patient experience, patient engagement, accreditation activities, and patient flow optimization. This includes having oversight hospital-wide risk management activities and maintenance of the corporate risk register. The Director ensures effective stewardship of human, financial, and physical resources while anticipating future organizational and system-level pressures and opportunities.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for the implementation and sustainment of the organization’s Quality Framework, the annual Quality Improvement Plan (QIP), and ongoing accreditation readiness
  • Oversees the Quality and Risk Management (QRM) system, quality-of-care review processes, and supports organizational learning from incidents and patient safety events
  • Provides strategic oversight for the hospital-wide risk management program and stewardship of the corporate risk register
  • Provides strategic leadership for initiatives that improve access to care, transitions, and length-of-stay and patient flow performance across the continuum
  • Builds strong relationships with regional partners including Ontario Health, community agencies, and system collaborators
  • Allocates, monitors, and evaluates physical, human, and financial resources within the portfolio
  • Supports data-informed decision-making and organizational performance monitoring and reporting
  • Anticipates emerging system pressures affecting patient safety, access, and experience and develops strategies to proactively mitigate associated risks

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Master’s Degree in a related Nursing, Health Administration, Quality Improvement, or a related health discipline. Undergraduate Degree with a suitable combination of progressive years of experience considered
  • Demonstrated leadership experience advancing quality improvement, patient safety, and system transformation
  • Experience leading initiatives related to patient flow, access to care, or transitions across the continuum
  • Strong understanding of accreditation standards, regulatory frameworks, and quality improvement methodologies
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships across interprofessional teams and system partners
  • Demonstrated experience working within complex healthcare environments undergoing change and transformation
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise risk management
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and reporting skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills supported by performance data interpretation
  • Experience using clinical and administrative information systems (e.g., Meditech Expanse, Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Bilingualism (English/French) considered an asset

Working Environment

On site at North Bay Regional Health Centre with travel to our other existing offsite locations

Demands of Position (Other)

  • Fast-paced work activities involve the need to concentrate with an attention to detail, to be able to assess and evaluate information from a variety of sources
  • Required to participate in NBRHC administrative on call schedule
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.

NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services that throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.
