Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
Under the supervision of the Food Services Manager or designate, the Dietary Aide will perform a variety of duties related to the setting up and serving of meals, the preparation of food items such as muffins, sandwiches or toast, and the cleaning of dishes, trays and food service area.
Work is performed in accordance with Public Health regulations, Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021and Food Premises Act.

Accountabilities:
Specific Responsibilities
- Set tables; prepare serveries and dining rooms in each home area for food service.
- Directs serving of meals in each home area and ensures food safety by monitoring food and equipment temperatures.
- Ensures timeliness of meal service.
- Ensures proper food handling procedures are followed, including HACCP.
- Sets up bulk food carts and serves hot/cold meals according to special dietary instructions, portions out and serves food and beverages as directed, and prepares and delivers nourishment to home areas.
- Makes beverages and food items such as tea, coffee and toast. Assembles items such as sandwiches and salads, washes, peels and stores vegetables and fruit.
- Strips, racks and washes items such as trays, dishes, pots, pans and utensils, operate dishwashing machines, stack clean dishes and utensils, clear and clean tables.
- Maintains cleanliness of the server, including floors, countertops, sinks, machines and equipment by sweeping, damp mopping and spot-washing as necessary, and removes garbage.
- Checks and restocks dietary supplies in the serveries from the main kitchen.
- Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, fire, safety, sanitation, environment, and infection control.
- Swipes in and out at the start and end of each shift using the Employees time clock.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The Dietary Aide stands and walks throughout the working day, as well as reaches, stoops, bends, lifts and carries food products, dietary supplies and cleaning supplies.
- The Dietary Aide must be able to lift and/or carry up to 20 lbs. and withstand exposure to temperature and humidity changes as in entering refrigerated storage units, operating ovens, dishwashers, and steam tables.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a Food Service Worker, Food and Nutrition Management or Culinary Management/Arts program at a college of applied arts and technology or a Food Service Worker program provided by a career college or be enrolled.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
- Valid Food Handlers Certificate
Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum of 1 years of prior related experience in Long Term Care Homes or similar setting.
- Knowledge of the Canada Food Guide, Ontario Public Health Act (Health Protection and Promotion Act: Food Premises), Fixing Long-Term Care Acr, 2021, Food Premises and the “Sanitation Code” for Canada’s Food Industry.
- WHMIS guidelines.
- Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point guidelines (HACCP).
Skills and Capabilities:
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Ability to work cooperatively with all managers and staff and create a working climate that is positive and mutually supportive.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to develop and maintain rapport with elderly residents.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $23.11 to $23.43 with a maximum of $23.75.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
