The base salary will be $62,480 - $89,040 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

About Us

Western’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives will lead system-wide change required to advance truth and reconciliation efforts, achieve equitable outcomes for Indigenous peoples, and implement Western’s Indigenous Strategic Plan. The Office will be committed to building and strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities locally, provincially, nationally and internationally, and fostering an academic environment, where all students, staff, faculty and community members experience the university as a welcoming, supportive, culturally-safe environment in which Indigenous languages, ways of knowing, being and doing are respected and supported.

Responsibilities

The WLL Community Engagement and Program Coordinator will play a vital role in advancing Indigenous strategic directions. The coordinator will facilitate the development and implementation of various projects that have cross-campus and community impact, and advancing Reconciliation Efforts across campus. The Coordinator will manage the development of project plans, requiring active partnership and engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities, in particular Western’s Indigenous Postsecondary Education Council (IPEC). The role will work under the direction of the Director, Indigenous Engagement and the Wampum Learning Lodge, to implement projects, ensuring the achievement of project outcomes within the established timelines and budgetary constraints. The role will prepare and present updates to key groups throughout the project lifecycles and support the development and delivery of key university communications and marketing related to Indigenous initiatives that support ongoing implementation of Westerns’ Indigenous Strategic Plan.

Qualifications

This position is designated for candidates who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, Inuit) from Turtle Island and can affirm claims of Indigenous membership and citizenship as required within Western’s MAPP Policy 1.58 – Affirming Declarations of Indigenous Membership and Citizenship. Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree; major in Indigenous Studies, Education, and/or Communications backgrounds is preferred
  • Master's degree is preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience in an academic environment supporting Indigenous students and/or initiatives
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations
  • Experience implementing and coordinating projects
  • Experience and knowledgeable of Indigenous community engagement practices is preferred
  • Organizational and/or strategic planning experience is an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of project management tools and resources
  • Knowledge of Indigenous affairs practices in postsecondary educational contexts
  • Knowledge of Indigenous communities including First Nations band structures and processes, and of Indigenous ways of knowing and perspectives, particularly local Indigenous communities (CMO)?
  • Familiarity with Indigenous research methodologies, program evaluation and Indigenous education performance indicators
  • Familiarity with social media platforms relevant to student populations, and marketing trends and best practices
  • Project management skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and perform well under pressure
  • Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
  • Verbal communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
  • Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
  • Indigenous cultural competency with an ability to interact and work effectively with people from different cultures and backgrounds
  • Ability to understand student and community needs and expectations and provide excellent service to directly and indirectly satisfy expectations
  • Ability to make decisions and recommendations that are clearly linked to the organization's strategy and goals
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to display a blend of diplomacy and persistency to achieve goals while working collaboratively
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
  • Capacity to consider issues from the perspective of others
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
  • Computer skills with the ability to creatively use and integrate technology to improve quality and productivity
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
