The Alberta Medical Association is currently recruiting for a Senior Communications Consultant to join our Advocacy & Engagement Team. This is a unique opportunity to join our team in a temporary role through September 30, 2026, with the exciting possibility of an extension based on project needs and performance. The AMA has a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will be based out of our Edmonton or Calgary office and will have the opportunity to work from home but maybe be required to occasionally go into the office or attend meetings in person.

Team Overview

The Advocacy and Engagement branch is at the heart of the AMA’s mission to champion Alberta physicians and advance the health care system. We drive advocacy, member communications, media relations, social media and government affairs - serving as trusted internal consultants to all AMA branches.

Our team leads strategic initiatives that amplify the physician voice, shape public policy and foster meaningful member engagement. We excel in strategic communication planning, writing, design, publication management, digital communications, social media, website design and management, environmental scanning and event coordination.

Position Overview

The senior communications consultant plays a strategic role in planning and implementing communications for internal and external audiences. The consultant provides communications advice to staff in AMA branches, programs and external, multi-stakeholder audiences.

This position requires ongoing contact with various areas of the AMA including the Accelerating Change and Transformation Team, AMA senior staff, AMA members, programs and other professional and allied organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works autonomously and in collaboration with several teams.
  • Develops and executes strategic communications tactics to support priority projects and deliverables.
  • Maintains clear and consistent communication with Advocacy and Engagement team members regarding current projects, progress updates and potential areas of overlap and synergy. Actively identifies opportunities for collaboration and alignment between ACTT initiatives and broader AMA communications.
  • Provides strategic communication advice to in-house, initiative-driven teams and committees (expert prescriber role: acknowledged, informed, qualified to provide advice).
  • Provides strategic communication advice to external multi-stakeholder projects (upholding AMA interests).
  • Manages communication needs for various priority projects.
  • Handles calls/queries from team and physician members relating to projects; monitors and identifies opportunities and risks, notifies and/or provides advice to management accordingly.
  • Environmental scanning of Alberta’s health care and political environment in development of communications deliverables.
  • Graphic and website design.
  • Project management, including the development of workplans, implementation and accountability for meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and build strong, collaborative relationships with both internal colleagues and external partners.
  • Proactively manage the AMA’s reputation by navigating complex situations, resolving conflicts and fostering trust among stakeholders.
  • Lead change management initiatives and apply quality improvement methodologies to drive communications excellence and continuous improvement.

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Public Relations or related field.
  • Membership in IABC or CPRS an asset.
  • Minimum five years’ senior experience in corporate or not-for-profit/association communication environment.
  • Experience should reflect measured results in successively more responsible projects and positions and the ability to deal with sensitive issues proactively in urgent situations.

  • Flexible and adaptable, able to work within a changing environment.
