About the role

Alfred Health Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

The Department The Central Sterilising Service (CSS) is an integral part of Alfred Health, providing a service to The Main Alfred Hospital Operating Suite, Tha Alfred Centre and Sandringham Hospital Operating Suite and also to the wards and other departments.

The service consists of four locations: -

  • A 24 hour per day facility on the Ground Floor of the Main Ward Block of The Alfred campus. This facility provides a full decontamination and sterilising service to wards and other departments as well as the sterilisation of instruments and equipment decontaminated and packed in the satellite facilities. Where required this facility also provides decontamination and sterilising services to the Caulfield campus.
  • The First Floor CSS satellite facility which is situated within the Main Operating Suite is where instruments and equipment undergo pre-treatment prior to full decontamination procedures in the main Ground Floor CSS. This facility also operates 24 hours per day and instruments and equipment used in that suite.
  • The Alfred Centre Processing Unit, located on the Second Floor of The Alfred Centre, within the Procedural Suite, includes the decontamination and packing area as well as the endoscope processing room. This service operates extended hours from Monday to Friday.
  • Sandringham Hospital Sterile Services Unit, located adjacent to the Sandringham Operating Theatres, provides for the needs of the operating theatres and the wards and departments on that campus. This service operates for extended hours, seven days per week.

The Role Instrument technicians employed within the CSS are responsible for the processing, from decontamination through to issue, of sterile instruments and equipment used in all areas of all campuses of Alfred Health. Staff are required to work rotating shifts, 7 days a week once they have completed Workplace Competencies.
