Department of Radiology
BC Children’s Hospital
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) is seeking a part-time Nuclear Medicine Physician and Medical Director to join the Department of Radiology. Training and/or experience in pediatric diagnostic radiology is highly desirable, but not required.
The successful applicant will join one other Nuclear Medicine physician in our team of 16 Pediatric and Interventional Radiologists delivering imaging services at the BC Children's Hospital, a 220-bed tertiary and quaternary care hospital serving British Columbia's children and families; we also deliver imaging consulting services to the entire province of British Columbia. The radiology department is located within the Teck Acute Care Centre, which opened in October 2017. We are equipped with state-of-the-art 3T and 1.5T MRI, dual-source high-pitch CT, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, radiography and angiography/interventional systems. BC Children’s Hospital is one of the leading academic children’s hospitals in the world, and the position offers the chance to work in a highly professional environment with superb clinical colleagues while tackling an enormous variety of complex and interesting cases.
Our Division of Nuclear Medicine provides full-service functional and molecular imaging. We have two SPECT-CT cameras in the hospital, and we supervise and report pediatric PET-CT scans performed at the BC Cancer Agency, located a short distance away. We have an active I-131 therapy program for treatment of thyroid cancer, and an MIBG therapy program for neuroblastoma is under development. The successful applicant will be required to provide clinical service coverage 2-3 days per week, and will also be expected to provide sole coverage of the service when a colleague is away on leave. Applicants interested in full-time work are also encouraged to apply, but this will require pediatric diagnostic radiology experience in order to be able to contribute to the diagnostic imaging service.
As Medical Director, the successful applicant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day medical activities of the division. They will work with our technologist and nursing leaders and other clinical departments to provide service and maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance of the division within the framework of the Health Authority and the College of Physicians and Surgeons’ Diagnostic Accreditation Program. The abilities to cooperate closely with other groups, to set and maintain high expectations for excellence, and to provide positive, supportive leadership are essential for this position.
Teaching and clinical research are integral parts of the role, and the position includes protected academic time. The BCCH Department of Radiology is affiliated with the University of British Columbia, which offers residency training in Nuclear Medicine. Applicants should demonstrate strong communication skills and aspire to advance academic radiology, and they will be expected to supervise and teach Nuclear Medicine residents and Pediatric Radiology fellows and subspecialty residents. The successful applicant will be recommended for clinical faculty appointment to the University of British Columbia. Academic rank, dependent on qualifications, will be conferred by the Department of Radiology of the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine.
The Department is committed to supporting and maintaining a positive work-life balance for its medical staff. The position offers a good fit for a physician interested in part-time work, and a number of our existing staff work part-time to increase time with their families and quality of life.
Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of British Columbia. Applicants must have received or be eligible for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Nuclear Medicine. Prior completion of a recognized fellowship in Pediatric Radiology is highly desirable. Applications from trained pediatric radiologists who are willing to undertake Nuclear Medicine training to become eligible for certification are also encouraged.
