What can you expect?

Trail Host 1’s are in a highly visible role, providing an outstanding experience for guests enjoying hiking and sightseeing in the Sunshine Meadows. Trail Hosts provide assistance and information to guests, ensuring safe and enjoyable visits with a minimal environmental impact. Trail Hosts work under the supervision of the Summer Operations supervisors and closely with all public safety, guest services, and outdoor departments.

This job might be right for you if you think you would really enjoy:

Constant monitoring of guests and the designated trail system, including:

  • Travelling on foot and rotating to various posts on the Sunshine Meadows trail network.
  • Working in the Village Interpretive Centre.
  • Describing points of interest, answering questions, and supplying information.
  • Providing all guests with an orientation talk upon arrival.
  • Providing historical and cultural information related to the Sunshine Meadows.
  • Engaging with and assessing guest needs and expectations, providing orientation, recommendations as required, and reminders to stay on the trails and respect the environment.
  • Providing emergency responses including first aid, wildlife and weather situations.
  • Performing light trail maintenance and keeping the Interpretive Centre tidy and organized.
  • Participating in lift, gondola, and self-evacuation procedures.

Effectively handling the rescue litter and emergency transportation equipment, along with possibly operating a Kubota.

  • May be asked to participate in facilitation of movement of materials by helicopter longline.
  • Ensuring outhouse stations on the trail network are clean and stocked with supplies. Maybe asked to change outhouse barrels and communicate with mountain operations team regarding Levels.

Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities:

  • Selling lift tickets and tours.
  • Answering phone calls and emails with accurate information.
  • Reporting changing weather, unusual operating conditions.
  • Reporting, responding to, and assisting with wildlife conflict management.
  • Timely and accurate emergency response, incident and deficiencies reporting.
  • Completion of training in Company and department policies, procedures, wildlife conflict protocols and on the unique alpine meadow environment.

Other duties may be requested and assigned from time to time.

And you have:

  • Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and CPR/AED Level C training is required. Must meet Alberta Occupational.
  • Health and Safety requirements.
  • Interpretive Guides Association (IGA) Banff National Park - Basic Knowledge Course.
  • Post-secondary education is an asset but is not required for the role.
  • Preference is given to those who have experience in seasonal, recreation and tourism-focused workplaces.
  • Outgoing, positive, and friendly attitude.
  • Passionate about providing an excellent service experience.
  • Calm under pressure and patient, able to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally, comfortably to groups, and on a VHF radio.
  • Prepared to work flexible schedules (weekends, holidays), and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Maintain professional conduct when in uniform, on or off-duty (and online).
  • Effectively provide, support, and assistance to coworkers.
  • Attend and actively participate in meetings and training.
  • Effectively and professionally liaise and communicate with others.
  • Must be neat, punctual, and dependable.

Additional Considerations:

  • Employees must always be of sound mind, exhibit good judgment, and report to work fit for duty.
  • This position requires the ability to walk, hike, and stand for long periods of time in rugged terrain and at high altitude and inclement weather. An appropriate level of physical fitness is required, and the ability to safely use a chairlift.
  • Hosts will often be working alone, in a remote, alpine environment.
  • Some required uniform pieces (shirt, jacket) are provided. Hosts must be prepared and wear appropriate footwear (Hiking boots/shoes with ankle support recommended), gloves, layers, bug nets etc. for the conditions.

This role is subject to all terms and conditions of the Sunshine Village Employee Handbook and Policy Manual, and the Alberta Employment Standards Code.
