About the role

The Technical & Reliability Manager – Motive Power is responsible for improving the reliability, safety, and consistency of Cando’s locomotive fleet by developing and implementing technical standards, maintenance processes, and reliability improvement initiatives. The Technical & Reliability Manager – Motive Power is responsible for improving the reliability, safety, and consistency of Cando’s locomotive fleet by developing and implementing technical standards, maintenance processes, and reliability improvement initiatives. With a focus on equipment performance and maintenance compliance, the role supports the Motive Power group by developing maintenance procedures, conducting locomotive and maintenance audits, and identifying opportunities to improve maintenance practices across the Cando system.

Working closely with the Motive Power Manager, site mechanical teams, and external stakeholders, the Technical & Reliability Manager ensures maintenance practices align with company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. The role provides technical leadership through the development of maintenance standards, oversight of maintenance quality, and implementation of initiatives that support continuous improvement in locomotive reliability and operational performance.

General Accountabilities

Service & Leadership

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal departments and operational teams to support reliability improvements and consistent maintenance practices across the Cando system
  • Lead reliability and technical initiatives by establishing goals, developing technical procedures, and implementing improvements to maintenance practices and equipment performance
  • Support internal teams by identifying opportunities to improve locomotive reliability, maintenance efficiency, and operational consistency
  • Contribute to the development of mechanical and technical programs that support the long-term reliability and sustainability of Cando’s locomotive fleet
  • Support the development of technical training programs, materials and development of mechanical staff to ensure safety, quality, and understanding exceed industry or company standards.

Operational Management

  • Develop and support technical documentation including maintenance procedures, inspection standards, troubleshooting guides, repair specifications, and maintenance policies
  • Standardize locomotive maintenance processes across the Cando system to ensure consistent practices between operating sites
  • Conduct periodic locomotive and maintenance program audits to ensure company policies, safety systems, and regulatory requirements are being followed
  • Review maintenance practices, inspection records, and repair procedures to ensure high-quality mechanical services are being delivered
  • Analyze locomotive failures and recurring mechanical issues to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for reliability improvement
  • Develop reliability improvement recommendations and technical solutions to address recurring equipment issues
  • Work with internal departments and site teams to identify and implement technical improvements that enhance equipment reliability and operational performance
  • Monitor industry developments, regulatory changes, and technological advancements that may impact locomotive maintenance practices or reliability programs
  • Provide technical guidance and recommendations to support maintenance decision making and long-term fleet reliability strategies

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate equipment failures and identify practical reliability improvements
  • Ability to develop clear technical procedures, documentation, and reports that support consistent maintenance practices
  • Team player that is results-oriented with a personal style that fosters cooperation and collaboration across departments
  • Ability to communicate clear and concise technical information to operational teams and internal stakeholders
  • Pro-active and strategic thinker capable of identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability and maintenance processes
  • Ability to conduct equipment and maintenance audits while maintaining credibility and strong working relationships with operational teams
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety, compliance, and quality
  • Functional computer capabilities including Windows based computer environment, the internet, and MS Office applications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum ten (10) years experience in locomotive maintenance, heavy diesel equipment maintenance, or railway mechanical operations
  • Experience in reliability engineering, equipment performance analysis, or maintenance program development is considered an asset
  • Experience developing technical procedures, maintenance programs, or engineering documentation
  • Experience in railway mechanical operations or systems management is considered an asset
