It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. TI has over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services. By incorporating the principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.

The Health Research Fieldworker plays a central role in the success of the Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (QNIHS) in the National Capital Region (NCR). Unlike general survey roles, this position requires Inuit candidates who bring lived experience, cultural grounding, and professional expertise to ensure that data collection is conducted in a trauma-informed, safe, and culturally respectful manner.

The role is client-facing and directly responsible for building community trust, supporting participants, and ensuring the integrity of a highly sensitive, 1–2-hour national health survey covering topics such as housing, education, mental health, substance use, suicide, and death.

In preparation for data collection, the interviewer will be required to attend and successfully complete a paid 10- day survey training.

Responsibilities

  • Administer long-form survey with accuracy, confidentiality, and cultural safety.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all surveys administered using electronic tablets, with errors tracked through data quality checks.
  • Create a warm, inclusive and supportive environment for participants, while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Manage participant distress with sensitivity, pausing or rescheduling surveys as appropriate.
  • Transfer collected data to the regional Data Analyst within 48 hours of collection, following all security protocols.
  • Identify and flag data integrity issues, ensuring follow-up as needed.
  • Assess when participants may require referral to mental health, crisis, or social services.
  • Document and track all participant referrals to community resources, ensuring follow-up where appropriate.
  • Represent the QNIHS project in the community with professionalism, respect, and cultural humility.
  • Attend and actively contribute to scheduled community of practice meetings, and peer learning sessions representing the survey team professionally and respectfully.
  • Submit accurate progress reports on data collection bi-weekly (or as scheduled) and participate actively in team meetings, contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Share insights and feedback to strengthen data collection processes and cultural safety practices.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of Inuit culture, values, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and traditional practices. Demonstrated lived and professional experience in Inuit communities, knowledge of issues related to Inuit health and wellness. Capacity to manage emotional stress and support participants through traumatic subject matter. Effective leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, excellent attention to detail and has a curious nature and interest in learning. Ability to effectively work with other team players, be flexible in the work schedule as weekly hours and workdays may fluctuate.

Community College or Undergraduate Degree in Research, heal, indigenous practices, social work or counselling is preferred.

One to two years’ experience in data collection, one-on-one interviews or customer services in required. One to two years’ in research, health or healthcare, Indigenous studies, counselling and preferred. One to two years’ pervious experience conducting sensitive interviews or survey research and in intake or counselling services and living or working in an Inuit community is preferred.

Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Availability to work evenings and weekends as required is preferred. Fluent in English, written and oral is required and ability to speak Inuktitut is preferred. Ability to successfully complete a 10-day intensive survey training program is preferred.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary range is $62,000 to $65,000
