The Opportunity
Are you ready to apply your geoscience expertise to support safe and sustainable energy development in Alberta? As a Geologist, Resource Development in the Geology & Hydrogeology Team within the Oil & Gas Subsurface Group of the Regulatory Applications Branch, you’ll play a key role in reviewing regulatory applications to ensure proposed subsurface activities are technically sound, environmentally responsible, and aligned with Alberta’s expectations for safe development. You’ll assess geological interpretations, evaluate development plans, identify potential subsurface risks, and provide clear, well‑supported recommendations that contribute to consistent and transparent regulatory decisions.
At the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), you’ll work closely with technical specialists, industry applicants, and government partners to bring clarity, efficiency, and rigour to the application review process. Your evaluations help ensure that oil and gas resources are developed in a manner that prioritizes public safety, environmental protection, and long‑term sustainability.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Review subsurface development applications to ensure geological information is accurate, complete, and meets regulatory requirements, providing clear recommendations that support safe and sustainable resource development.
- Draft site‑specific approval conditions that address geological risks and subsurface impacts, using a risk‑informed approach to guide consistent regulatory decisions.
- Work directly with industry applicants and internal technical teams to clarify requirements, discuss geological considerations, and support a transparent, collaborative review process.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary technical reviews when applications require expertise from other areas, helping keep the process organized and on track.
- Monitor ongoing development through desktop surveillance to confirm that geological and operational risks are being effectively managed.
- Provide geological expertise for concerns or disputes, supporting Statements of Concern, appeals, hearings, and Alternative Dispute Resolution processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, offering insights that strengthen regulatory processes and support broader organizational initiatives.
What we’re looking for in you:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or Earth Science.
- 5 to 7 years of geological experience within Alberta’s oil and gas sector, with broad exposure to both carbonate and siliciclastic systems, and associated resource development projects.
- Strong understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework and associated legislation, and how they apply to various subsurface application scenarios.
- Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) designation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or eligibility to be registered as such, is a requirement.
- Assets include a strong understanding of Alberta’s regulatory framework and associated legislation across the energy lifecycle, and a solid understanding of fundamental geological concepts and methods.
- Awareness of project management principles demonstrating well developed organizational and analytical skills, the ability to meet deadlines and work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
Additional Information:
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
- Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
