Position Summary

This is not a clipboard-only safety role.

At Jayco Builders Inc., safety means setting the standard, staying visible, and helping people complete the work the right way - consistently, practically, and without excuses.

We are looking for a Health & Safety Coordinator who can balance field-level leadership with disciplined safety administration. This role requires someone who understands policies, COR requirements, inspections, documentation, and legislative compliance, but also understands that real safety performance is built through trust, coaching, presence, and follow-through.

The successful candidate will be confident enough to address unsafe work directly, approachable enough to earn credibility with crews and sub-trades, and organized enough to keep safety systems current, compliant, and audit-ready.

This role will not be successful from behind a desk alone. Success will come from being active on jobsites, engaging workers, supporting supervisors, identifying risk early, and driving accountability across the company.

What You Will Do

  • Build strong working relationships with employees, supervisors, management, and sub-trades.
  • Be present on construction sites and workplace areas to observe work, coach workers, and reinforce expectations.
  • Conduct and document workplace inspections, jobsite inspections, hazard assessments, and safety audits.
  • Identify unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and emerging risks before they turn into incidents.
  • Address safety concerns directly and professionally while working with teams to create practical solutions.
  • Develop, review, and maintain safety policies, procedures, safe work practices, and related documentation.
  • Support compliance with Alberta OH&S legislation, WCB requirements, WHMIS, Alberta Transportation requirements, and COR standards.
  • Prepare for and support internal and external COR audits, including documentation, corrective actions, and deficiency closeout.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns, including root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
  • Lead safety orientations, toolbox talks, tailgate meetings, company-wide safety meetings, and training sessions.
  • Support employees and trade workers in completing required safety paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Maintain safety records, inspection reports, training documentation, incident files, safety metrics, and corrective action logs.
  • Manage subcontractor safety prequalification, documentation review, and related compliance requirements.
  • Assist management and supervisors with WCB claim management and return-to-work coordination where required.
  • Maintain vehicle, trailer, driver, tool, and equipment inspection records to support compliance and safe operation.
  • Coordinate vehicle and trailer maintenance requirements, including annual commercial vehicle inspections.
  • Assist with insurance applications, vehicle registrations, and insurance claim requirements as needed.
  • Provide management with clear reporting on safety performance, risks, deficiencies, and improvement priorities.

What We Are Looking For

  • A relationship builder who can earn credibility with crews, supervisors, and sub-trades.
  • A confident communicator who can address issues directly without creating unnecessary resistance.
  • A practical safety leader who understands that policies only matter when they are understood and followed in the field.
  • A proactive problem-solver who identifies hazards early and follows issues through to resolution.
  • A detail-focused professional who understands the importance of documentation, audit readiness, and corrective action tracking.
  • A steady presence who is comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • A coach, not just an enforcer - someone who can influence behaviour, build buy-in, and raise the standard across the business.

Requirements

  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence and reliable transportation.
  • NCSO designation or desire to obtain, or equivalent safety experience and a clear path toward maintaining required qualifications.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR.
  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta OH&S legislation, WHMIS, WCB processes, and related safety requirements.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or maintaining health and safety policies, reports, procedures, or safety documentation.
  • Experience with COR audit preparation, internal audits, corrective actions, or safety management systems.
  • Comfortable conducting jobsite inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, and safety meetings.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong English communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong critical thinking, organization, and follow-through.
  • Physically able to complete site walks, inspections, and other field-level work in active construction environments.
  • Available to work Monday to Friday, with flexibility for overtime, occasional Saturdays, and site-related schedule demands.
  • Ability to reliably commute to Bow Island, Alberta, or relocate before starting work.
  • Applicants successful in the interview process may be asked to complete a pre-employment assessment as part of the final hiring process.

Assets

  • General construction, heavy earthworks, or residential construction experience.
  • Experience working with subcontractors and trade workers.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, construction, or field-based operational environment.
  • WHMIS 2015 Training the Trainer certification.
  • Experience using FastField or similar safety software.
  • Experience managing vehicle, driver, equipment, or commercial transportation compliance records.
  • Experience supporting insurance applications, claims, or project prequalification submissions.

What Jayco Builders Inc. Offers

  • Competitive wages of $30-$40 per hour, with compensation dependent on certifications and experience.
  • Health and dental benefits including health spending account.
  • RRSP matching.
  • 6% vacation pay.
  • A steady, year-round role with long-term growth potential.
  • Sundays off and a culture that respects time with family.
  • Clear training roadmaps and opportunities to build your career.

This role is for someone who wants to be involved, visible, and accountable.
