The opportunity:

This position provides experienced dental assisting services and clinical support to Health Canada grant funded dental and dental hygiene apprentices, dentists, dental hygienists, students, residents, faculty and staff in helping to ensure excellence in oral health care delivery while optimizing academic goals. Confidence working in a digital dental environment requires the ability to complete all Scope of Practice chairside duties in addition to inputting and modifying electronic patient data as per protocol.

The Centre provides dental services for the underserved communities to individuals that are geographically isolated or medically, physically, and/or financially compromised. CCOH programs include the Home Dental Care Program, Access Downtown Dental Clinic, Deer Lodge Dental Clinic, and St. Amant. The Centre also administers a dental program in Churchill and supplies dentists for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s SMILE plus program. Travel to various clinics operated by the College and to northern communities such as Churchill, MB may be required. As a requirement of employment at the College of Dentistry, all staff in a clinical setting are required to submit the Child Abuse Registry Check at the time of hire. Provincial regulatory bodies regulate procedures a dental assistant may perform. The responsibilities of this position are governed by standard of practice and well-defined guidelines and may involve training new employees at the same level. Employees at this level normally work under general supervision.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Successful completion of a recognized Phase II Dental Assisting/ Chairside course, including the advanced module.
  • Must be registered with the Manitoba Dental Association.
  • One year of related experience in a dental office.
  • Experience with dental billing such as insurance forms, billing and collection of patient accounts required.
  • Proficiency in patient management software and attention to detail.
  • Some positions require successful experience working with patients with economic, physical and mental disabilities. Working with Geriatric clients an asset.
  • Experience with intraoral scanning and digital dentistry procedures preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be capable of carrying/transporting dental equipment weighing up to 50 lbs is required.
  • Must be able to communicate well with staff, students and the public in a pleasant and efficient manner is required.
  • Ability to maintain calm professional demeanor during times of high operational tempo and multiple demanding tasks is required.
  • Ability to communicate well with others is required.
  • Use specialized instruments and equipment is required.
  • Reassure patients to help reduce anxiety with dental procedures is required.
  • Provide assistance to patients with special needs is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records is required.
  • Ability to multi-task and complete required tasks within a specified time frame is required.
  • Ability to be flexible in the workplace and be a team player is required.
  • A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
  • Must hold a valid Manitoba Drivers' License.
  • Must hold a current CPR certificate
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality record required.
  • Formal WHMIS training preferred
