As a central agency, the French Language Services Directorate (FLSD) supports, collaborates with and empowers the Government of Yukon departments and other public bodies to serve and inform the public in French. We foster strong partnerships with departments and stakeholders to improve access to government services in French. We aim at building bilingual capacities across government by providing client-focused services such as translation, training, advice, and operational support.

The opportunity…

As Senior Language Policy Advisor reporting to the Manager, Language Policy and Planning, you will supervise a team of language policy advisors within FLSD. This position is responsible for leading the development of strategic French-language service policy and planning initiatives to support the implementation and enhancement of French-language services government-wide. The Senior Language Policy Advisor provides leadership and expertise that contribute to the negotiation of agreements within and outside the territory. The work is fast paced, varied and requires the ability to manage and prioritize several projects with multiple clients and stakeholders at once.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience representing the interests of an organization in formal or strategic contexts – such as interdepartmental meetings, meetings with stakeholders or decision-makers.
  • Experience supervising, leading, coaching or mentoring a team.
  • Experience conducting research and data analysis to develop evidence-based policy recommendations.
  • Experience planning, leading, coordinating and facilitating complex, multi-staged projects.
  • French language skills are considered an asset.
  • Post-secondary degree in social sciences, natural sciences, public administration, law, linguistics, public policy or related field; graduate-level experience is considered an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or significant experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

To best support the achievement of key strategic and business objectives, candidates may be assessed on:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with emphasis on cultural sensitivity and aptitude to apply knowledge and interpersonal skills that allow active listening, understanding, empathy and appreciation, while working collaboratively and closely with individuals from other cultures;

  • Ability to assess challenges comprehensively and critically, while paying strong attention to details and accuracy;

  • Strong communication and leadership skills, including the ability to share information effectively;

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage projects independently;

  • Willingness to learn from and provide mentorship to colleagues and collaborate as part of a diverse team to achieve a common goal;

  • Have a strong understanding of the Yukon Languages Act

Job Requirements:

Willingness to travel within and outside the Yukon once a year
