About the job

In this role, you will:

  • provide scientific and technical expertise regarding the sedimentary geology of Ontario
  • ensure informed implementation of policies, programs, and initiatives related to subsurface resources
  • review and evaluate applications for well licenses and permits associated with this regulated activity and tenure for rights to Crown pore space
  • verify geological information and interpretations, identify issues, and endorse applications for approval
  • initiate, guide or participate in scientific research projects to improve understanding of the sedimentary geology of Ontario, and prepare reports and maps based on research findings

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • You are a registered geoscientist or geoscientist-in-training in good standing with Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO) without relevant limitations, or registered with another regulated association of geoscientists in Canada, including the Professional Engineers of Ontario if qualified to practice geoscience.
  • You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Geologic knowledge and experience:

  • demonstrated knowledge of petroleum geology, including hydrocarbon reservoirs, seals, and drilling environments in southern Ontario
  • knowledge of subsurface conditions related to oil, gas and salt operations, including well integrity, sealing formations, and fluid migration pathways
  • understanding of geological considerations for well plugging and abandonment, including isolation of zones and protection of groundwater
  • experience applying geological knowledge to support regulatory review and decision-making under the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act

Analytical and evaluation skills:

  • ability to analyze and interpret geoscience data including well logs, drilling records, core samples, and geochemical data
  • ability to assess geological and technical information to support decisions related to well licensing, drilling, plugging, and abandonment
  • experience evaluating well history and subsurface conditions to support plugging and abandonment strategies

Communication and interpersonal skills:

  • capable of preparing scientific and technical reports suitable for publication
  • skilled in presenting complex scientific ideas to both professional peers and non-technical audiences
  • ability to interact with stakeholders and provide advice to government and industry clients
  • ability to communicate technical and regulatory requirements related to well operations and plugging and abandonment to industry stakeholders
  • ability to provide clear recommendations and decisions based on legislative and technical review

Leadership and project management skills:

  • ability to plan, organize, and conduct geological studies
  • skills and experience in directing the work of field and laboratory staff, consultants and assistants

Legislative knowledge:

  • demonstrated knowledge and application of the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act and associated regulations
  • experience reviewing and assessing applications for well drilling, licensing, suspension, plugging, and abandonment
  • understanding of regulatory requirements related to well integrity, environmental protection, and lifecycle management of oil, gas and salt wells

Computer and GIS skills:

  • proficiency in software for map construction, gridding, contouring, and 3D mapping
  • knowledge of GIS principles and visualization techniques
