Position Summary
The Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services (CALCS) at Centennial College is hiring a Counsellor to support the mental health and accessible learning needs of a diverse student population. Reporting to the Director, Equitable Learning, Health and Wellness, the successful incumbent will provide counselling support to students accessing the CALCS. The incumbent will serve students within a multi-campus institution through in-person and virtual supports. The Counsellor will provide a range of mental health and accessibility supports, including: conducting intake assessments, providing supports through single session counselling and solution-focused brief therapy, co-creating Individualized Student Profiles and academic accommodations in collaboration with students and faculty; providing crisis interventions and case management, and making institutional and community referrals. To enhance equitable access to mental health and accessible learning supports, the incumbent may also support through the provision of psychoeducational groups for students and professional development workshops for staff and faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Supports assessment of student needs through robust and validated intake assessment tools related to mental health and accessibility

  • Assesses functional abilities and limitations of students with disabilities in a postsecondary academic setting; interprets medical documentation and psychoeducational assessments in building individualized student profiles and accessible learning plans; works with faculty, administrators, and other educational professionals in supporting accessibility and student accommodations.

  • Provides goal-oriented, brief counselling supports and interventions from student intake through referrals and ongoing 1-1 psychotherapeutic supports.

  • Collaborates with CALCS colleagues, faculty, and campus/community partners to support student needs by developing resources, training sessions, and consultation services on counselling and accessibility-related issues.

  • Co-creates personalized care plans with students, which equip students with the tools they need to manage their health and wellness through self-management strategies, referral to a range of campus services (e.g., financial services, career services, success advisors, etc.), plans for ongoing support through CALCS, tools and resources, and referrals to community services.

  • Leads the response to student mental health and accessibility-related crises when appropriate, and consults with stakeholders, including the Emergency Management and Public Safety Team, Case Management Care Team, and senior leadership, to provide expert guidance and case-specific advice.

  • Completes risk assessments and safety plans with students presenting with suicide risk; provides timely intervention, safety planning, support and referrals as required.

  • Facilitates bridging and referrals for students who require complex or specialized supports through local community and health services.

  • Attends counselling team meetings and participates in case discussions

  • Delivers counselling from a trauma-informed and anti-oppressive lens, with sensitivity to ethno-cultural, religious, sexual orientation and gender issues, which arise in counselling/teaching situations.

  • Maintains professional documentation and statistical information.

  • Participates in an appropriate professional body and engages in professional development activities in order to meet the changing demands of the position and the requirements of their regulatory profession.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Master’s degree from an accredited program in Social Work, Counselling, or a related discipline (e.g., Education), qualifying the candidate to provide mental health, accessibility services, and psychotherapeutic interventions at the university level.

  • Minimum five (5) years counselling experience with youth, young adults, and adults, including those with a range of disabilities.

  • At least three (3) years of counselling / mental health / accessibility services within a community organization or health care setting, with demonstrated experience coordinating care across sectors, agencies, and interdisciplinary professionals.

  • Member of a relevant professional association (e.g., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers).

  • Successful completion of supervised counselling by a recognized counselling professional.

  • Experience conducting client assessments, including risk assessments and a demonstrated capacity to make appropriate recommendations for treatment, support and risk management.

  • Demonstrated clinical experience with the ability to deliver time-limited, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including training in brief counselling approaches such as single session therapy.

  • Proven ability to manage crisis situations independently and work effectively with clients experiencing severe emotional difficulties

  • Extensive knowledge of mental health and accessibility issues, with experience supporting youth or emerging adults with complex mental health challenges and disabilities; experience in educational settings, including assessing disability-related needs and recommending accommodations.

  • Expansive knowledge of relevant community services and mental health / accessibility resources in the community; Strong existing relationships with community service providers an asset.

  • Demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class and religion within a complex multi-racial and multi-faith environment.

  • Demonstrated commitment to, knowledge of, and skill in application of anti-oppressive practices within a counselling environment.

  • Experience working autonomously and as part of an interprofessional / collaborative care team.

  • Excellent communication (verbal/written/presentation) skills
