Please note: Candidates chosen for an interview will be contacted via email on January 12th, 2026, for interviews taking place in-person on January 13th or 14th, 2026. Reporting to the Town Clerk, the Accessibility Specialist leads the Town’s efforts to foster an inclusive, barrier-free community by ensuring compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and related legislation. This position provides expert guidance on accessibility standards, develops and monitors the Town’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, remediates documents, supports website compliance, and serves as the liaison to the Accessibility Advisory Committee. The role champions accessibility initiatives across all departments and engages with the public and external partners to advance best practices.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead corporate accessibility initiatives to ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and related legislation.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the Town’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan and annual status reports.
  • Provide expert interpretation of accessibility legislation and advise departments on compliance strategies.
  • Remediate existing documents and establish Town-wide processes for creating accessible documents; deliver staff training on accessibility standards.
  • Ensure Town websites and digital content meet WCAG standards.
  • Coordinate and prepare reports, presentations, and briefings for Council, senior leadership, and the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC).
  • Manage and support the AAC to fulfill legislative obligations under the AODA.
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding accessibility, conduct outreach and education initiatives.
  • Build strategic partnerships with provincial and municipal governments and sector organizations to share best practices.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a 3-year college diploma or university degree in Public Administration, Disability Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in accessibility compliance, policy development, and project management.
  • Knowledge of AODA, Human Rights Code, and WCAG 2.0/2.1 Level AA standards.
  • Proficiency in accessibility tools and software (Adobe Acrobat Pro, CommonLook PDF, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) and accessibility evaluation tools (PAC, Axe, WAVE).
  • Strong research, analytical, and communication skills; ability to interpret legislation and translate requirements into actionable plans.
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs and facilitating committees.
  • Certifications such as Accessible Document Specialist (ADS) or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) are considered assets.
