Job Description Summary
Performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities as assigned by Operations Manager, Custodial Services to ensure effective use and care of the Campus premises. This position is assigned to both day and afternoon shifts. These shifts cover seven days per week.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Operations Manager, Custodial Services.
Work Performed
- Managing inspection of the general condition of Campus Buildings and initiates action to improve deficiencies with physical facilities.
- Manages designated staff by performing duties such as prioritizing and assigning work tasks and inspecting completed work to ensure conformance with established standards.
- Responsible for related personnel issues for assigned staff such as performance evaluations, orientation and training. Determines training needs, coaches employees to meet personal goals and performance targets.
- Participates in the Interview/Selection process, and in the management of first step grievances and other labour relations matters including disciplinary action and follow up in accordance with UBC policies and procedures.
- Participates in employment termination process including recommendation and follow through.
- Managing inventory of supplies and equipment used within the Custodial Department and recommends purchase of related supplies and equipment.
- Co-ordinates activities of the trades and other staff periodically assigned to the Campus Buildings.
- Acts as Building Operations representative liaising with Department Administrators.
- Notes alternations within Campus Buildings and reports discrepancies from plans to Operations Manager, Custodial Services.
- Receives and resolves on miscellaneous premises requests and complaints.
- Works with personnel to reduce incidents of vandalism and misuse of building property by recommending actions and changes.
- Co-ordinates and supervises Building Operations activities associated with bookings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to detect and/or properly follow up on operating and maintenance problems in buildings and failure to ensure that buildings are properly maintained could result in dissatisfied users, higher costs for increased repairs or maintenance and potential safety hazards.
Supervision Received
Works under minimal supervision and reports to the Operations Manager, Custodial Services. Uses own discretion on many day-to-day operations.
Supervision Given
Managing subordinate staff which varies from 3-25 service workers and also includes a varying number of trades personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- Minimum of four years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in a position involving customer support including experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Extensive practical and supervisory experience in all phases of custodial work.
- Must be familiar with industrial cleaning methods and procedures, and the operations of all related equipment, in order to supervise the staff and meet service standards. Knowledge of WHMIS is required and First Aid would be an asset.
