The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime, including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking. The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

The Training Academy (TA) promotes excellence in training and instructor development by establishing training standards, and in partnership with stakeholders, facilitating the delivery of induction programs and other courses for peace officers in Alberta.

As the Training Coordinator for Police Conversion Training (PCT), you will guide the delivery of this complex and highly specialized training to support the implementation of the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (APSP). The PCT Training Coordinator will work in conjunction with the PSES Training Academy (TA) Management and other stakeholders to ensure PCT and experienced officer training programs meet the certification standards of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP) and the Ministry.

As a team lead coordinating the activities of contracted Instructors, the Training Coordinator must be aware of and understand operational requirements of the TA and also those of associated stakeholders. A constant focus on professionalism and the safety of PSES personnel in any training capacity is paramount. The Training Coordinator will ensure all course curricula reflect best practices and defined course standards, as well as undertake ongoing revisions needed to address evolving operational requirements.

Working within applicable legislation, policies, and procedures, the Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and all provincial and federal statutes, the Training Coordinator ensures alignment under the Police Act.

Qualifications

Required:

  • University graduation in a related field plus at least 4 years progressively related experience.

Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of:

  • One year of directly related experience for one year of directly related education, or

  • One year of directly related education for one year of directly related experience.

Related experience must include recent police officer experience working in a training capacity.

Related education may include but not be limited to university graduation or equivalency in a related field, such a Criminal Justice/Criminology, Policing/Law Enforcement, Social Sciences, Business, etc.

Assets & Preferences:

  • Instructor qualifications in related police recruit training topic areas.

  • Experience in supervisory roles.

  • Experience coordinating training standards, delivery, audits, instructor resources, processes, etc.

  • Formal training, education or experience instructing police-related topics using adult learning principles.
