##Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline required.
  • Certification in a recognized suicide prevention or awareness program is required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of three years of directly related experience is required.
  • Experience working with support planning and students with disabilities is required.
  • Experience supervising staff is required.
  • Understanding of medical terminology is required.
  • Preference given to candidates with post-secondary experience.
  • Experience with Canada Student Grant and assessments is an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Counselling skills required.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, teambuilding and communication (oral and written) skills are required.
  • Creative problem solving and attention to detail skills are required.
  • Proficiency in using advanced features of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) required.
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail required. - Ability to research literature and conduct online searches on topics related to disability to develop or enhance services and programs is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a fully contributing member of a team is required.
  • Ability to oversee staff (train, give directions, establish goals and timelines, provide feedback).is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, students and members of the general public from different cultures and generations in a confidential, tactful, polite, respectful and competent manner is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to cope during highly stressful peak periods is required.
  • Ability to prepare and facilitate/deliver workshops and presentations is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a higher education setting and knowledge of University of Manitoba policies and procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting Indigenous students preferred.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology (e.g. Dragon and Kurzweil) preferred.
  • Training and knowledge of Aurora Student is preferred.
  • Connections to community and higher education organizations related to students with disabilities is an asset.

##Key responsibilities

  • Identify needs and support students with disabilities.
  • Oversee accommodation plans for students (250+).
  • Request and evaluate medical documentation from registered health professionals.
  • Manage case files by researching and gathering all relevant materials.
  • Identify and aid students and faculty in addressing systemic, interpersonal and other barriers to a successful academic program.
  • Develop and implement accommodation plans.
  • Attend accommodation team meetings to facilitate plans and discuss non-standard accommodations.
  • Ensure that the University's Bona Fide Academic Requirements will not be compromised.
  • Negotiate reasonable accommodation requests with academic teaching staff.
  • Provide ongoing support to students and academic teaching staff through regular follow up and to review effectiveness of the plan.
  • Provide advice to students regarding leave requests.
  • Provide advice to academic teaching staff regarding the review of extensions to course work.
  • Work with departmental staff to ensure records in the SAS database and in Aurora accurately reflect the student status.
  • Promote positive team interaction between stakeholders, i.e. students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide ongoing support to academic teaching staff, listening to academic requirement concerns, liaising with medical practitioners to establish clarity, and making recommendations for external referrals.
  • Tracks and reports on caseload.
  • Interprets University of Manitoba policies, procedures and regulations in regards to the Manitoba Human Rights code, and the Accessibility for Manitobans Act as they pertain to SAS students and their accommodations.
  • Knowledgeable in matters pertaining to PHIA and FIPPA regulations and must have PHIA/FIPPA training.
  • Delivers student information sessions about the Canada Student Grant.
  • Coordinates the application, review, and follow up with Manitoba Student Aid (MSA).
  • Manages the invoicing process, including follow up with students and MSA and collection of funds.
  • Refers students for a further assessment.
  • Develops programming and new program ideas.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current developments in the human rights legislation, bona fide academic requirements, academic accommodation and disability fields.
  • Develop and deliver education and training to academic teaching staff, graduate students and on campus and off campus community agencies.
  • Maintains a working relationship with the disability community.
  • Communicates with other University departments and administrative units, external agencies and acts as a departmental representative on related committees.
  • May be asked to invigilate for the SAS exam centre during peak periods, (evenings and weekends).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.
